I've a decently large library of tutorial videos that I'd like to add to Plex. I'm interested in using the Personal Media agent and organizing them in the format Provider -> Topic -> Videos. For example, Lynda.com -> Ableton Live 9 Essential Training -> - Managing Files in Live.mov. After reading the section on personal media in the media naming and organization guide, I've tried loading what I've got in to Plex just to see what happens. As the guide described, files show up episode numbers instead of getting meaningful titles from the filename. I realize I could edit the metadata by hand, but, well, I'm lazy and would rather not have to do that.
So, that's a long-winded way of saying ... Any chance that the personal media scanner could be updated to be a bit more intelligent regarding naming of videos? =]
edit: Alternatively, how about providing a simplified file browser for specific content? For example, I could just add the Tutorials directory I've got and instead of using a scanner and a metadata database, for that specific section in Plex, I can instead browse the folder/file structure?
Use the TV section & the Personal MetaData agent instead, might work out better.
TV Show -> Season -> Episode
Provider -> Topic -> Video
Might work out better. You could even dive deep and make .nfo files for them all & use the XBMC importer agent instead :)
I had tried the TV section w/ the Personal Agent, but had the issue I mentioned where videos were named with simple episode numbers instead of using the filenames as titles. =\ The naming guide mentioned that the personal metadata agent was a work in progress .. so I figured I'd come cast my vote for getting titles from filenames.
The nfo file option sounds interesting. That might be a less tedious option.. I'll have to look in to it! I've never used the XBMC importer before.
Tagging doesn't sound much different from editing the metadata by hand tho?

Yes does involve a bit of manual effort but unlike editing metadata by hand once its done its there permanently, so if you have to rebuild your library for whatever reason you do not need to redo it.
Having said that I too would like it to use titles from the filenames.
