Personal Video Files

Server Version#: Windows 1.27.0.5897
Player Version#: Web 4.83.2
I have a number of personal MP4 videos that have metadata on them (album, titlte, artist, track). Filename is long and mostly something like %album% - %track%
These are group by collection and also playlist (mostly one album goes to one collection - repeat for playlist)

What is the proper configuration of the library, agent, etc?
Ideally:

  1. Player UI shows title and not filename
  2. Sort order respects track number and not filename

Initially my library was showing and sorting by filename. I fumbled with settings and it showed title but sort order was busted.
Thanks for any comments

Your best shot will be adding those files into an Other video type library.
IIRC those automatically look for embedded metadata on supported media types (e.g. mp4/m4v/mov). The album tag should usually populate as Collection.

Video libraries however don’t maintain a track order. The closest thing would be to create a TV Show type library (with Personal Media Shows as its agent). This will allow you grouping the videos into shows and seasons, ordering them by episodes. However for that to work you’ll need to adjust your file names to follow the official tv-show naming schema (e.g. show name - sXXeYY - optional title.ext; keep in mind, Plex doesn’t read an episode title from the file name!)

Thanks.
A bit more sophisticated/work involved than I planned. I don’t need “seasons”. I appreciate that your solution is very cool if you have a depper hierarchy
What I did? I used a mp3tag tool and changed the filename to <track> <title>
Now they are sorted properly and show a meaningful name on plex interface
I wish there was another way to do this but making above change is very easy and acomplishes what I want
