PGS Subtitles playback failure on Samsung Tizen

I’ve identified an issue with the Plex Samsung Tizen app where it is unable to play videos with PGS subtitles. It doesn’t request a Subtitle Burn from PMS and instead plays the video for a second, buffers, and eventually says “Playback Error: An unexpected playback problem occurred.”

I’d think it would be ideal for Plex to attempt to Burn PGS subs on Tizen (even though I personally block that with Tatulli for 4K versions) instead of the video being unable to play.

This issue only occurs for movies with PGS subtitles as SRT subtitles work correctly.

It would be interesting if someone with a higher-end 2022 Samsung could confirm whether this is an issue as well.

I know some folks here may recommend disabling subtitles, but these are direct Blu-ray backups with PGS subtitles, and many movies include Foreign Language Translations as Forced Subtitles which are often critical to the plot of the movie.

CC @DaveBinM this is another one of the bugs I pinged you about on Discord. Opening this thread to hopefully help with tracking this issue.

Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#: 5.54.1
Streaming Device: Tizen 6.0 (Samsung UN55AU8000)

We’re aware of this issue, and are tracking it internally.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave and glad to hear you’re already aware.

Just curious though… does Tizen have any support for image-based PGS subtitles or is the likely outcome that Plex will need to burn PGS subtitles?

We have built some support, but we have heard of a few cases like this that we’re looking into.
