Philips 65OLED934 Dolby Visioin+Atmos not triggering Dolby Vision (TS-Container)

Hey guys,

as the topic says I have issues of playing a Dolby Vision+Atmos my mac Philips AndroidTV.
I have a TS file, which contains :
HEVC Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06 Video Track
Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos Audio Track
DTS XLL Audio Track

What works perfectly is playing back the files with the mentioned DTS track, but as soon as I switch to the Atmos track the video falls back to HDR or HDR10+. When I switch back to the DTS track the video switches back to Dolby Atmos. This is very strange. Can you tell me whats going on?

Here’s a guess:

Your TV supports dts audio. When you play the dts audio track everything direct plays in Plex. Plex streams the audio & video unaltered, so no problem with Dolby Vision.

Your TV cannot decode TrueHD audio. When you play the TrueHD audio track, Plex transcodes it to a supported format. Due to the transcoding, Plex Media Server has to separate, then remultiplex the audio & video tracks. Plex calls this Direct Streaming. Something about the remux process causes the Dolby Vision information to be discarded. The HDR information is retained. Therefore the video plays as HDR, not Dolby Vision.

You can monitor playback in Plex Dashboard -> Now Playing to verify direct play / direct stream / transcode.

FYI on Atmos:

There are two kinds of Atmos audio for home theaters.

Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos, aka “Streaming Atmos,” is the format used by Netflix, Amazon, etc streaming services.

TrueHD + Atmos is the format found on Blu-ray discs. It is not listed on your TV’s spec sheet (I have not seen any TV that can decode TrueHD). Since your TV cannot decode TrueHD audio, Plex transcodes it to a supported format.

Thanks for the clarification about TrueHD, I get it. But why Plex switches to HDR or HDR10+ instead of Dolby Vision? When I switch back to dts or ac3 Dolby Vision comes back.

and btw, dolby atmos tracks play just fine with mkv container!

There are no known TV’s that will direct play or pass-through TRUE HD + ATMOS via plex, so if your tv does in fact play truehd+atmos with mkv, then please show screenshots of your plex dashboard with a 4k-uhd+truehd+atmos direct playing, and provide details on how you are confirming atmos?

is the atmos coming through the tv speakers?
or a sound bar?
or a receiver?
are you using E-ARC ?
where is the atmos being indicated, is it displayed on a LED or screen or some other visual indicator ?

Ok, you’re right. Now I saw that the TrueHD is being transcoded to eac3. But, back ro my Initial question. Why Plex isn’t still trigger Dolby Vision, but reverts back to HDR or HDR10+ when I change the audio tracks? As soon as I change back to dts or ac3 plex triggers dolby vision as it should. Can you tell me why it’s happening on truehd tracks, even if they being transcoded? What has audio to do with the hdr formats of the video track?

Also fyi, after plex updated to 8.8.1 Dolby Vision trigger stopped on profiles 6 and 7.
Profile 8 is still good to go.

Because audio is being transcoded and then have to be remux with video the meta data for DV is stripped. Since I have only read that Make MKV and not MKVtoolnix is making DV files who knows when Plex will adapt Make MKV method.

Thanks, that clarifies a lot. Im using ts files for dv though. Dv in Mkv never worked on my tv, even without transcoding.
