Philips Hue Integration

+1

I think its awesome. I use a projector. If starting a movie would automatically dim the lights, how great would that be?

That's an amazing idea! I would really enjoy a similar feature to Philips AmbiLight as well... would buy the Hue bulbs just for that!  B)

There's a nice demonstration of the already working XBMC plugin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU5ZvXzXmrU

Wouldn't you be able to leverage index files that are pre-generated instead of trying to screen-cap live?

Philips does it themselves as well (if you have a recent TV): http://www.philips.com/content/global/country-selectors/www/en/ambilight-hue.html

There's a small project which pretty much does what's asked for in this thread: https://github.com/Umfs/Ambiant-Light-with-Hue but this is all Processing/Java based, a horrible resource hog on the CPU and not very user-friendly to change settings (have to change code for it).

Basically what it does, is grab a screenshot a few times per second, then based on the number of lights you've got configured it 'slices' up the screenshot in different parts, grabs the average color of that slice and does a curl post with some JSON values with the matching hue color to the Hue bridge (it's a very open and documented API)

I'd love to see this built-in into plex as a plugin that allows automatic dimming of lights when you start plex and starts hue'ing along movies based on where your lights are.

I have hue bulbs but I'm not sure this is a feature that could be integrated without just adding bloat...

Hope to see philips hue integration soon.

I have Philips Hue lights in my living room and it would be awesome if I could use them as ambilights!

Sometimes I wish I could code to create stuff like this myself

Yeah, would be awesome +1

+1 , would be great

I just bought a Hue starter pack with 3 bulbs and a Hue Bloom for my living room and was looking for these kind of features.

This would be a killer plugin!

Rather than a specific HUE implementation, I would much rather see IFTTT support that would allow us to integrate HUE, and other home automation items.  It would be nicer to support all of them with one effort instead of having to pursue them individually.

Hue is already at ifttt, but this is different! When you start I movie to lower lights and when you pause to raise the lights.

You would need a Plex plugin for IFTTT. I have already tried IFTTT for automating my hue lights. It wasn’t quick enough for me (or reliable enough) unfortunately.

Reread my post.  I'm well aware that HUE is already at ifttt.  But instead of spending the effort of implementing only HUE integration, generic triggers make much more sense.  These could be integrated with other items (blinds, WeMo, HUE, etc.).

Still, we need a more generic implementation of reporting on events.  It makes no sense to try to integrate it separately for every brand of smart lights, home automation implementation or even documentation project.

there is the xbmc json api that is available and used by more than one home automation system to integrate xbmc or plex with controlling the light or whatever else.

for a free system have a look at fhem (unfortunately most of it is in german). it has a xbmc/plex module and a hue module (besides many other) and it works perfectly to dimm the light if a movie starts or to display a message in plex if the phone rings or a window is open.

this is not for the ambilight feature but even here fhem has a module to extend the philips tv ambilight to the hue devices and alsoa module to control the prismatik software for light-pack.

I don't have hue lights. But it seems possible to do Plex > Trakt.tv > Twitter > IFTTT > Hue

Install trakt.tv plugin for plex. Go to the notifications in settings for Trakt and have it use a specific hashtag for "I'm watching" and "I watched" to twitter. Go to IFTTT and then tell IFTTT whenever this specific hashtag is on twitter have Hue lights do this. Sure it be slower, and not work when pausing, or not finishing the movie. But it's a start.

+ 1 yes ! please integrate philips hue control for dimming lights when starting a film ! that would be great !
