Photo Tags - Plex Tags vs Imagga Auto Tags vs File Tags

I want to tag my photos at a file level for use in various applications, not just Plex.

I have explored enough of Imagga Auto Tags to know they will not do a useful tagging job for my photo collection, and anyway, they do not save to the file, only to Plex’s own database.

When opening an individual photo file in Plex it shows the autogenerated tags in one section, and tags in another. I think this ‘tags’ refers to any individual tags you have added within Plex, so again, just at a plex database level and not hardwired into the photo file itself.

However, when looking at the ‘view by’ dropdown in a photo library, it lists various file level exif options such as camera model, iso etc, and has options to view by ‘tags’ and ‘places’, though when i select the tags option it shows none in a library where autotagging has been enabled and so many tags exist.

Can i therefore assume that this ‘view by’ tags is completely different to the tags and autotags shown in the plex photo information, and in that drop down of exif it relates to file level tags outside of Plex? That if i tag my photos at a file metadata level, those tags will appear in this view by dropdown as selectable options?

Can I also assume that there is no way these file level metadata tags can be chosen whilst viewing the library in the same way that the Plex tags and Imagga autotags can?

I’d be really interested in this answer as well.
I do my tagging on Shotwell, so it is saved to the metadata of each picture.
In my testing, I managed to have Plex recognize my tag (just added one to a dozen of files). When I extended to a bunch of different tags over around 500 files of last year, Plex just refuses to acknowledge they are there. Quite sad.

This has been a request for years. How long?

Request where @jeffwelsh88_outlook_com ? You say it like there is a place where such things are known and managed? Or do you just mean it is a recurring forum question?

You’re right @GreyGarcez , it is sad, but it is also quite insulting. From posting this and digging deeper it seems that the questions of plex photography people are pretty well ignored. I mean why not just say upfront, ‘Plex photo stuff is pretty basic, it will not link with meta data in the way any half serious photographer would want it to, and you may as well save yourself the time of figuring out that what we call tagging has nothing whatsoever to do with what any other platform of file system calls tagging.’ Then, we’d know where we stood.

I am not aware of any formal request tracking. If you search photo tags here you will see a few posts asking about this. Pre-covid a developer that monitors this form was going to work on this, but nothing has happened.
