Plex Server running on Windows 7. Version 1.5.5.3634. Created a test photo library weeks ago with a handful of pictures. Enabled the Automatically tag my photos feature on that library and selected English. I am Using the Web app in both Chrome and Edge and android app and do not see any tags on this library.
This may not be helpful, but I want to make sure you’re looking for them in the right place. The only way to view tags on photos (without digging into the actual XML files) is as follows:
Open any image.
Hover your mouse over the image, which brings up a toolbar at the bottom.
This opens a side panel with info about the image, including what may be only a partial list of the tags applied to it (I’ll leave it to you to appreciate the beauty of a waterfall being auto-tagged as ‘broccoli’ and ‘edible fruit’).
The tags are not editable as they are in every other Plex library. There are a few feature requests to change this. If you agree, please add your vote by clicking ‘Like’ on the first post in that thread.
I mentioned above that it shows a partial list of tags. To see the complete list of tags automatically applied to your images, you’ll need to look at the XML for the image.
While viewing the photo library (not the individual full-size photo), hover over the photo thumbnail.
Click on the ‘…’ item at the lower right corner and select ‘Get Info’ from the menu that appears.
Thanks for the explanation. By Viewing the XML I can confirm that the auto tag worked on some.
In this test library there are 9 photos. 7 show only date related tags in the info pane like “This Day” or “This Month” . Two photos show nothing in the side panel when you click on the info icon maybe because they were the only pictures in a date range? Four of them have the AutoTag in the XML 5 do not. None of the 4 pictures that have an AutoTag show any of the AutoTag information in the info pane maybe because there are not 2 or more pictures with the same AutoTag? Does it only show tags in the info pane when 2 or photos shares the same tag?
That may be the case, I don’t know. Because of the oddities I saw (like waterfalls tagged as “broccoli”), I decided not to pay much attention to the autotagging. It seems to be as unreliable as Gracenote and Last.FM are for music metadata. Eventually I’m going to have to get my own photo tagging system squared away, so when (if) Plex ever gives us the ability to use them, I’ll be ready.
I just answered my own question. After adding some more photos it seems an AutoTag shows up in the info pane once there is more than one photo sharing the same AutoTag.
Agreed it would be nice if Plex would leverage existing tags.
