Pixelation on dark screens

I am getting pixelization when streaming from Plex to Shield TV on black screens. When I stream the same show to my Pixel 6, I do not get the pixelization.

Trying to figure out if it is the TV or Shield or something else. Ideas?

4 shot of TV, 4 on Pixel 6.

Thanks!

Oof, those look ugly.

Is the media being transcoded? That looks like extremely low ~480ish p quality. Perhaps the Pixel is using the relay, which restricts the video stream to 2 or so megabits, which almost always needs a transcode.

What is the quality of the movie? If a transcode is happening, is it a 4K video with HDR?

Video is 1080p (HEVC Main). The TV is on a wired connection. It’s just on black or dark screens. Other quality is fine.

Did some googling - Changing HDR on the HiSense from “Brighter” to “Darker” has helped quite a bit but still there (but better).

I’ve been having similar issues, trying to track down the culprit. This might sound strange, but in the server settings, Under Settings > Network, do you have anything set inside the LAN Networks section?

Is it transcoding? Check the dashboard when it is streaming (in a browser, click the upper-right heatbeat icon and choose “Dashboard”)

Nothing set in “LAN Networks”…Thx!

Not transcoding - Direct Play. Thx.

Hmm. I don’t have much experience with video codecs or whatnot. If it’s not a transcode coming from Plex, then I am lost. The Pixel screen seems much darker. Maybe it shows on the Shield because the brightness or gamma have been turned up high?

I think it is the bitrate. I tried a different version - had much higher bitrate and the problem went away…Thx!

Yeah, it looks like your original file (from wherever you “cough” acquired it from) had a really low bitrate for a 1080p video. Looks like it was just heavily compressed.
