Play subtitles by default

I have a hearing impared family member, and we both have plex pass. They are 80 years old and forget that they can apply subtitles, or when they search for subtitles they will try one and then give up.

Please, please please my media has english subtitles just have it look for “eng” or “english” in the embedded subs and auto play this. They are not technically savvy enough to go through 3+ menues to enable subs every single episode.

Why is there not a setting like “play [language] subtitles if available”

You can already do that…

  1. Open https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/account
  2. Edit the Audio and Subtitle settings section
  3. Check Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks
  4. Select your preferred audio and subtitle language (e.g. English)
  5. Select if subtitles should show always
  6. Select if Plex should prefer certain subtitle types

Mind, you must do the above, while logged in to their own plex account.

If they have their own plex account (as opposed to be a direkt member of your Plex Home), you should use your web browser’s ‘incognito’/‘privacy’ mode to sign in to their account.

This does not appear to work on Roku. I will reply to this topic with the account we tried to enable subtitles.

Roku is easiest for older people due to large UI and easy to press buttons. I use a shield myself, but my grandma and Aunt are on Roku ultra the latest version of roku and Plex.

This is my aunt’s account. :slight_smile: Was going to test it with her before I bothered grandma.

We tried enabling subs by default. Can you see them with this account? Thanks.

I also have the same Roku as her. (This is kingBen1993) I can test whatever u need and provide logs.

Rokus have a global subtitle setting which influences all apps. You will have to take a look at that.

I don’t know the Roku myself, but I found this remark in the documentation:

Roku Captions Mode

Enable or disable the Roku system “Closed Captions” mode. This must not be disabled if you wish to be able to view subtitles in Plex
