I’m running Plex in a docker on my Unraid server and keep it updated. I recently added an attic antenna and HDHomerun so we could DVR some OTA content via Plex. I “invited” both my wife and son to my Plex instance, so they log in using their credentials. My wife is complaining that by default, the subtitles are being displayed on most of the shows she’s recording, and she can’t find an easy way to turn them off.

The shows she’s complaining about show “SUBTITLES Unknown (Closed Captions)” on each recording. If I get her to this view she can easily see how to turn subtitles off, but she’d rather just have them off by default and not have to do it with every new show. I’ve looked and googled for some way for her subtitles to default off, but so far no luck. This is madening and I’d love some advice on this. I’m going to have to pay for conjugal visits if this keeps up.

The Roku has a central subtitle setting on each device for subtitles.
Check the settings there first and make sure that subtitles are disabled there.

On top of that, Plex has also subtitle settings per-user-account.
You can find these, if you go to https://app.plex.tv
log in as your wife (or “Switch User” to her profile if she is a member of your Plex Home)
then open the user profile page https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/account
and scroll down to Settings - Audio & Subtitle Settings
Enable “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks”
select English for audio and subtitles
set the “Auto-select subtitle mode” to “manually selected”

Wow. Thanks! That seems to have done it. I had to wait most of a week to let some shows record for her.
