Play without transcoding DTS-HD-MA but can't play TrueHD

Server Version#:1.20.4.3517-ab5e1197c
Player Version#: 2.2.0
TV Model: OLED55B9PSB
WEBOS Version: 05.00.02
DENON AVR-S750H Latest Version(not the problem)

Im not sure if the problem is server releated, but here I go:

I have bought an LG B9 and a AVR-x750h due EARC sinergy and Atmos/Neural:X capabilities.

Now i am able to watch movies in DTS-HD-MA, Atmos etc etc etc with passthrough from the TV to the AVR exept for TrueHD

Some people say you can’t passthrough HD audio with ARC and bla bla but they also refer of DTS-HD-MA and that must probably have changed this year so I can’t help but wonder if some is outdate on Plex profiles or an update is needed.

If i missed any information please leet me know, fisrt time posting.

I’m attaching my log, i have played Ghost in the Shell and then switched to Joker, both with truedHd selected on audio track options, then Joker I have changed to DTS-HD-MA for the sake of evidences of it working with passthrough.

Appreciate any help on adressing this problem! TIA!

The Plex app on LG TVs cannot pass TrueHD or dts-HD audio via HDMI-eARC to attached audio equipment. This is a TV, not Plex, limitation and applies to all such apps, not just Plex. See this post for additional details.

TrueHD audio will be transcoded to a compatible format then passed via HDMI-eARC to the audio equipment. Any Atmos information is lost during the process.

For dts-HD MA audio, the core dts 5.1 audio will be passed. The “-HD MA” portion is discarded.

Note that the limitation seemingly applies to all TVs, not just LG. I have not seen any post on the forum where a Plex app on a TV can pass TrueHD/dts-HD via HDMI-eARC.

If you wish to have TrueHD + Atmos audio, you have one choice, a Nvidia Shield Pro. It is the only known off the shelf streaming device that can passthrough TrueHD + Atmos audio and play 4K HDR video. See [INFO] Plex, 4K, transcoding, and you for details.

This is a TV, not Plex, limitation

Well, rtings says diferently:

Audio Passthrough

ARC Yes (HDMI 2)

eARC support Yes

Dolby Atmos via TrueHD via eARC Yes

DTS:X via DTS-HD MA via eARC Yes

5.1 Dolby Digital via ARC Yes

5.1 DTS via ARC Yes

5.1 Dolby Digital via Optical Yes

5.1 DTS via Optical Yes

This TV supports eARC when connected to a compatible AV Receiver, which allows it to send higher quality DTS:X and Dolby Atmos via TrueHD sound from an external device to your receiver. Like the 2018 LG OLEDs, it also supports DTS and Dolby Digital passthrough to a standard ARC receiver.

Means from a device like a blueray or Nvidia Shield.

No, it does not.

They state “from an external device.” Not from an app running on the TV.

I see…so i have bought this tv and choose an AVR with EARC for using with Plex for nothing…

WOuldn’t there be any bottle neck caused by nvidia Pro if i choose to buy one? Plus is there really much job to be done if LG implements HD passthrough with internal apps? I mean, passthrough wasnt suposed to be just a connection?

I can see two variants capable of passthrough in this list, is this correct? I know nothing about this product, but i can see a version with 500GB HD. Can i use this as plex server? lol It would be awesome to not let my computer ON an use this as player and server, but the later models don’t have HD from what i can see here:

The problem with TV based apps is a hardware limitation on the LG TV. Look at the block diagram in the thread I linked in my first post (this one). It shows the internal connection as ARC, not eARC. You can follow the conversation over to the AVS Forum for additional details.

External HDMI connections follow a different path (refer to diagram). Note the eARC arrow into the box labeled MUX. This is how external devices can pass TrueHD/dts-HD/etc audio via HDMI-eARC (if I’m interpreting things correctly…).

You could also connect any devices directly to your AVR instead of the TV. This takes the TV out of the picture as far as audio passthrough, codec support, etc.

Regarding the Shield as a client:

Purchase the 2019 Shield Pro. It supports Dolby Vision, which is not supported by the pre-2019 models.

Do not purchase the 2019 non-Pro “tube” model. It has stability issues. Query the forum for “Shield tube” to see the reports.

The 2019 Shield has other features such as “AI Upscaling,” which apparently helps quite a bit with lower resolution media. You can read product reviews online and forum posts for additional details (I’ve a 2015 model, so no direct experience with the 2019 enhancements).

Regarding the Shield as a server:

It can work well, but does have its limits. The documentation has helpful information. You will have to keep your media on external or network drives. You will have to move your Plex server folder (metadata) to an external drive, especially if you use chapter thumbnails, etc.

If you are only streaming within your local network and with minimal transcoding, the Shield will work fine (especially since the Plex client on the Shield direct plays almost everything).

You can use the Shield as a Plex client then enable the Plex Server later if desired. Plex has no limits on the number of servers on an account (or it is pretty high if it exists), so no problem running Plex Server on both your PC and the Shield.

I have a 2015 Shield Pro, w/ 500 GB internal drive. I do not use it as a Plex server. The last time I experimented with doing so, it was noticeably slower than Plex on my Synology DS918+. It transcoded two, simultaneous lower bit rate 1080p streams OK. I did not try transcoding Blu-ray rips, 4K media, etc.

The slowness was noticeable in how long the Shield took to scan libraries, generate thumbnails, etc. My Shield took several days to generate thumbnails for a ~800 movie library. The Synology did this in about 2 days max. Part of this is due to the 2015 Shield having a horribly slow, encrypted hard drive. A unit with USB3 drives/SSDs should be much faster.

Hope I answered your questions. Let me know if I missed something.

Thank you very much sir,(sorry for late response) have been thinking of sellling my computer to get a notebook and a nvidia shield, use shield as server AND cliente with 5TB+ external HD formated for internal use and i don’t care for Douby VIsion, (at last until now i have no media that uses it.

But i plan on having a PS5 and i heard that it can play true HD atmos and dts HD-MA Neural:x, so i’m not sure what to do right now.

And none of the limitations affect me. RIght now my computer can’t handle 4k => 1080 transcode of ONE movie cause i don’t have plex pass i have an I7-4770 having two capable clients seem redundant but i don’t think i will want to turn ps5 on everytime i want to whatch a movie lol
