Playback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error. after update to PlexMediaServer-1.18.8.2468-5d395aa9d-armv7hf_neon

Looks like updating my directory did not resolve my issue. It seems to be an issue with the recent update, this issue didn’t start occurring until somewhat recently, roughly ~10 day timeframe.

Thanks ChuckPa! I replied here since it seems the same issue, as it started within the same timeframe of other users, so it donen’t look like a platform-specific issue.

Anyway I’ll create a new thread then, thanks!

Lengthy my butt, I can’t make it half way through one movie without it doing this garbage

I run my Plex Server on my FreeNAS and this has been bugging me for about a year. Every update a new hope but still no cigar. Does it make any sense to post the logfile or should I just leave it?

As for client talk this happens on all my clients: Windows from web, iOS-app (both iPhone and AppleTV 4) and my XBox One.
iPhone casts to ChromeCast 4, Windows pc plays in browser, XBox and AppleTV4 are both cabled to tv.

I think the only device I haven’t had this transcoding error on is my iPhone when playback directly on the iPhone. But I never really play movies on my iPhone - 9/10 I ChromeCast and then I still get the transcoding error.

I think it’s related to subtitles. I can almost always workaround by disable subtitles and then enable them and repeat until it works. That is sometimes I don’t get to disable subtitles during playback before I get the transcoding error.

Also I’ve noticed while playback from web browser that if the movie right after I hit the play button doesn’t start to buffer (the small progress bar at the progression bar) it will eventually mean that the transcode error will occur within a few seconds say 5-10 seconds. If movie starts buffer right away the transcode error will not appear.
In most cases when the buffer doesn’t start the subtitles is messed up - either they will fall off after like 2 seconds before the transcode error pops up, or they simply won’t display and then eventually the transcode error pops up and exit the movie.

I think that the above mentioned forecast of the transcode error happens on all devices in code behind - it’s just way easier to catch when playback from browser because of general control and navigation.

I’m reading that this error has existed a few years now. Dates back to early 2018…

I’ve not experienced it before though, until recently. An update in March, has caused this to happen for us, in my house. Several times during watching a movies, it halts. And displays this annoying error. “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error”.

Something is off. Please look into fixing this - or tell me how to roll back to a version where this wasn’t an issue.

In advance, thank you.

Changing Update Library to once every 6 hours stopped the error message, I had mine set for 15 minute scans. That never stopped playback before.

Folks,

There’s conjecture and discussion about the problem but without logs, there is no way to know definitively what actually stopped it. ( No error message / code )

Would it be possible to get some of those DEBUG logs (ZIP file) capturing this having just happened?

I sent in a log file. Apparently, you did not see it.

@ykit

Please go back and turn DEBUG logging on.

I cannot help without it.

Also, be advised, you don’t save any space by turning it off.

Log files are of fixed size and a MAXIMUM of 60MB (Main + rollovevrs = each of 10 MB)

@alex4lex

Same thing about Windows, I’m afraid.
I can’t be of help there.

Apologies Chuck, did not realize I was in the wrong category, have since posted properly. Thanks for the response!

Just wanted to add a +1. Error occurs when scanning the libraries. I had it set to 1 hour intervals and now have it at 12. I opened my own post before seeing this one.
I have tested going back and forth in my scanning intervals and it is clearly the scanning that is causing it.
The error that I am getting has also been reported to be an issue with windows exhausting the default ports or being on the wrong default ports. I have checked these as well, but do sometimes get an event in Windows Event viewer at the exact same time as I have errors in PMS. This happens approximately half of the time that I have errors.
Here is my post, but I am going to keep watching here as well.
Other Post

While it has been suggested to roll back a version or two, I would rather not do that as it doesn’t really solve the problem and instead just keeps me on an old version. With the scanning turned to every 12 hours it drastically decreases the error rate and allows us to continue to work on it.

Thanks to all the Plex Team Members for the help!

i think i found a fix for the transcoding error. i have being monitoring my gpu, cpu, ssd, ram etc. and i found out my then my ssd capacity while transcoding got filled up my plex crashes and get the error.

so i think it has something to do with the space in temporary files plex is trancoding = (not anought space on hdd or ssd) for the trancoding to be because of the ssd or hdd get filled up with these temp files

I am going to try monitoring this.

Thank you for the heads up.

Do the temporary files just remove themselves once they are done transcoding?

your welcome and yes. when the movie is finished the trancoding is done and it will be deleted,

i have tried it for 2 dayes now since i found out what might be the error and it have worked for me ever since

i think if you have lets say a 50gb movie file, you will need atleast 50gb space left or more for plex to transcode the entire movie. that is what i have done, being sure where is anought space for the transcoding

i think the transcoding doesnt remove the already transcoded part of the movie you have seen and the entire movie will på saved as transcoded to temporally until the movie is done

This happens to me on the most random videos. It NEVER happens when I’m using the Plex App for Windows but does in browser mode and my users are getting the error on their TV apps. What can be done? My system has more than enough space/processing power.

Hey, can you please explain a little better how you got rid of this error?

My hdd has way more space than the movie I am playing and I am still getting this error.

yes i will try, but my english is not the best

1: im streaming direktly to my tv or phone. not out of my house

2: i have set the transecoder to do transecoding in the temp map on my ssd path: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp

3: i have atleast 60gb free space on my ssd

4: all my movies are not on the ssd but hdd drives so there are space for my transecoding on my ssd

5: i have turn of auto scan of my library and download update

6: Transcoder standard throttle buffer is set to 100

7: i have no plugins

8: i have disablet remote acces

9:i have disablet all premier show and trailer showing and in movie miniture show

10: debug level is disablet and direkt play is enabledc and direkt stream

11: all my oc on my pc is disabled and set to stock values

  1. im only using lan connection

  2. im using plex server and not the app to stream from

what all i have done, but what help me was that i have more space to transecoding on my ssd
