Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2621
Operating System: macOS 10.14.6
Player Version#: Latest on iOS, tVOS, Bravia TV and Nvidia Sheild

All of my users have reported this error during playback in the last week. I am unable to replicate locally but I think that is because everything I watch is direct play using the new experimental video player on tvOS. I did recently update to the latest PMS Beta version listed above. I also recently reset my Plex account password due to strange activity. In doing so I revoked all access for all devices and set them all up again. I know the issue has another post which many replies but it was quite out dated and other users have reported this issue recently with no response. I apologize if I should have posted this somewhere else. Thanks in advance.

I have uploaded the logs with debugging enabled.

I am also getting this error for external users as well. Very often over last week. I can supply logs if needed.
win 10 pro, 1909 up to date.
Happening on LG app, Roku, PMP on windows, Android version.
Server version: Version 1.19.1.2621

Can provide logs if need be.

My users are still experiencing the issue on PMS Version 1.19.1.2630.

I rolled back Plex Media Server to Version 1.18.8.2527 and issue is no longer happening. Not sure if this will fix it for everyone but it fixed it for me. I think I will hold off on upgrading for a while.

i have the same issue, please!!! fix this!!!

Same issue here for clients

Server v# 1.19.1.2645
Windows 10 pro 19041.172
Firecube whatever version

Same exact issue, I doubt rolling back as one suggestion says is the answer you want (judging by the 2018 post with the exact same problem).Plex Media Server.log (790.1 KB)

This has been an ongoing issue for me for over a year now, but over the past two weeks it has made watching remotely unbearable. Although I am on Version 1.19.1.2645, the problem persists regardless of version. The error happens so frequently that my users simply no longer watch.

The app being used doesn’t seem to make any difference. I have people using the LG app, Vizio app, Apple app, Roku app (there’s more but I’ll stop there). It’s happening to everyone.

It happens when viewing from a different WiFi network or from the same network here in my home.

I have never seen an answer from Plex staff. CAN SOMEONE FROM PLEX PLEASE HELP!

I am not saying this is the answer for everyone just explaining the only thing I have found to resolve the issue so far. Also, the post you are referring to was asking users to report the issue on the current version instead of going straight to rolling back which I’ve already done. I even called out that post in my original explanation specifically because it wasn’t resolved.

Server Version#: Version 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#: Version 4.22.3

What’s the ETA for a fix for this? I’m not the only one. Not really what I want to be going through while I’m locked in my apartment. See log

Broken as in this error message that interrupts playback. ā€œPlayback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an errorā€

I pay for my account and they drop a lot of stink bombs in these updates. I accidently allowed this update to install. I do regret that I did.

You can try downgrading if this wasn’t an issue with a previous version.

This is the Windows instructions but would be similar for Mac:

I tried to rollback but nothing would play. So I reinstalled the current version. I don’t have the version imediately preceeding this version so the older version evidently did not play well. I trashed the preferences as well, still broken.

Was about to create my own thread for this issue, my users have also been experiencing this issues the past 14 days or so. The issue started occurring after a plex update. I’ve been running my plex for around 2 years, and I haven’t seen these transcoder issues before.

When the issue occurs the users will be met with the following error:
TranscoderError

(sorry it’s in danish. It says ā€œPlayback error: Conversion failed. The Transcoder failed because of an errorā€)

It’s happened to several of my users, using different kind of players, across different devices and the issue is very intermittent, it doesn’t occur very often. I’ve gotten one of my users to note down a timestamp for when the issue occurred, and I’ve correlated it to the following log entry in the plex media server log:
Apr 15, 2020 13:05:25.041 [4688] ERROR - [Transcoder] [tcp @ 02ee83c0] Connection to tcp://127.0.0.1:32400 failed: Error number -138 occurred

I have the exact same issue happening. Do we know if there is a ā€œfixā€ coming for this?

I have this happen any time I scan my library and it reaches a file that is currently being transcoded. Have any of you noticed the timing of these errors lining up with library scans?

+1 on this issuePlex Media Server Logs_2020-04-16_11-55-28.zip (5.2 MB)

Per notme2000, I’m gonna try reducing my library scan times to see if that helps with this issue, as I have a fairly aggressive scan rate

UPDATE After 12H~ : so far haven’t seen the transcode error again after reducing library scan to occur once daily as opposed to my previous setting of hourly, which seemed to coincide with my errors. Will report after further testing

Same here, not able to play anything on any device (SmartTV, Web Player, iOS).
Everything was working fine before the update.

Version: 1.19.1.2645
Running on: QNAP TS-251+

I’m trying this but this is completely unacceptable for them to break functionality that has worked for years and not quickly come up with a fix. WE PAY FOR THIS!
