Playback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error. after update to PlexMediaServer-1.18.8.2468-5d395aa9d-armv7hf_neon

your welcome

I am also having this issue. Any news on a fix yet?

Hey, I have managed to get a work around, it seems that since the last two updates the library scanning is the issue. If you put it to scan your library daily, it should make things right again.

I’ve been experiencing this issue for a few months now as well, but my situation is unique, so posting this in case anyone else comes across this error under similar circumstances.

I have 2 Plex docker containers running on the same host, but pointed to separate plexdata folders.

For whatever reason, a few months ago the transcode error started occuring quite frequently, anywhere from a few seconds in to a few minutes.

After looking at the logs I saw the error followed by an error that the segment file could not be found.

I then opened the transcode folder and did continuous directory listings while the file played and just before the error popped up, all files were deleted from the transcode directory.

In my case, both containers remapped /transcode to the same directory on the host (and Plex was set to use /transcode for transcoding on both containers.) The odd part was the other Plex container wasn’t playing anything at the time, but it was doing a scan with intros and thumbnail generation which I believe uses the transcoder as well, but I could be wrong.

Once I reset both containers to use unique folders for transcoding and reset permissions on the transcode folder, everything has been working fine, even with scans set to run every 15m.

I don’t know this for a fact, but it seems that some update in Plex now tells it to indiscriminately delete all contents of all sessions of the transcode directory when it’s done with all transcoding tasks, even if that session wasn’t generated by that Plex node. Perhaps a way of cleaning up orphaned sessions?

Anyhow, not sure if this is somehow related to those of you experiencing this issue with a single Plex instance or not, but figured it’s worth sharing. I’m 99% sure in my case it was separating the directories that fixed it for me, but resetting the permissions on the transcode directory may have played a hand as well.
Ed

edit I forgot to mention I also lowered my transcode throttle buffer from 300 to 60.

One of my clients have been experiencing a lot of transcoding errors on multiple devices, such as Roku, Amazon, iOS, etc. I knew it wasn’t device specific. I’m going to try the subtitle change to see if that makes a difference. I’m going to reach back once we’ve tested it out and give an update so that Plex developers could possibly investigate this issue.

I recently migrated my Plex installation from the OpenMediaVault plugin to a docker container. Since that migration, I am getting the “Transcoder exited due to an error” message for any file that will not direct play on a specific device.
I logged into the console of the OpenMediaVault server and went to the “Plex Media Server/Logs” directory for the docker container. The I waited for a specific time (07:45) to start playing a file that have previously failed. After I got the “Transcoder exited due to an error” message, I ran the following two commands:

    grep -i err * | grep "Jun 10, 2020 07:45"
    grep -i warn * | grep "Jun 10, 2020 07:45"

These are the results

I am also attaching a download of my logs.Plex Media Server Logs_2020-06-10_08-03-30.zip (3.7 MB)

I found my issue. It was a PBKAC error. I installed the Plex container on a partition mounted with “noexec”, which prevented many Plex functions from running properly. I change “noexec” to “exec” in the /etc/fstab and everything seems to be working fine.

I am getting the same error and it only started to happen after the last server update. I have noticed every time I get the error my plex server is scanning media files. Strange thing is that it only happens with tv shows and not movies.

Hi David,
Can you elaborate on this please? started getting this error a few months back.

Server 2012 r2

I have my Plex install in a docker container on an OpenMediaVault server. OpenMediaVault is linux based. I have my docker containers on one of the data drives, which by default are mounted ‘noexec’, meaning the programs cannot be executed from that location. I had to go into the /etc/fstab and manually remove the ‘noexec’ parameter from the mount to get transcoding to work again.
It seems you are running Plex on a Windows Server, so this probably does not apply to you.

Same. Just happened a few times with the same show. Hadn’t noticed it before. Rebooted the server and so far so good. Strange though.

Confirming that the issue seems to happen while Plex is scanning the library for some reason. This might explain why people who have changed the frequency of the library scan has “resolved” the issue.

Will be monitoring my server for the next time this happens and provide debug logs.

Hi,
Thank you everyone, followed discussion I fixed my plex!
The issue was related to ‘noexec’ with mounting hard drive with the transcoding folder.

My setup: Raspberry pi 3, OMV, Portainer, Docker.

The issue happened on hi resolution movies.

Thanks,
Marius

I am new to this blog, but am having issues as well. I have the log if needed. Thanks

Defacto rules here are pretty simple.

  1. If you have a problem, please explain clearly (but don’t write a book about it)
  2. Provide the DEBUG enabled (not VERBOSE) logging, ZIP’d log files which capture the problem.
  3. If there’s anything specific to help us (timestamp, etc) please let us konw.

In short, without logs, we can only offer moral support.

My buddy had the same issue on Apple TV 4. The fix was to go into the player settings and disable the option for “Auto Adjust Quality”. For plex pass users also disable this feature on the server itself under the quality settings.

That doesn’t disable the auto-adjust feature server-side for all clients.

Settings under the Plex Web section are related to your current Plex Web client only.
