Playback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.

I've been receiving this error consistently starting today. Any time I try to play a piece of media, it starts to play but then stops with the error message "Playback Error Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error."

The only weird thing I can see in the logs is a repeating debug message about selecting subtitles.

Any ideas?

I am seeing this error in Version 1.12.3.4973.

I tried to attach my logs but the upload keeps failing. I have uploaded to pastebin. https://pastebin.com/LQViJ1C5

Please go to Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs
Attach the ZIP file here. It is about 5.2 MB when zippped. It will take a few moments and then the URL will be visible in your reply.

I need the full log and the XML which accompanies that file

Started having this problem too, worked fine Thursday (4/26) evening and prior, started Friday (4/27) morning. Didnt make any changes to anything that i know of. Win10 server to Roku Ultra on wired LAN, only transcoding audio from 7.1 to 5.1, happens with multiple similar files and is super intermittent, sometimes itll work fine for 30 minutes, sometimes itll do it after 30 seconds 3 times in a row, can even happen while paused, so for me at least its gotta be SOMETHING with the audio transcoding, which it says is from AAC to EAC3.

Nothing ive been able to figure out has made it better or worse, so far ive tried; rebooting the server, reinstalling PMS, changing the transcoder temp directory and throttle buffer, sacrificing a goat, and raising the priority of the PlexTranscoder.exe and EasyAudioEncoder.exe, so at this point im out of ideas of what might even be broken, so even less of an idea how to fix it.

From googling this tho i see a lot of posts with the same issue from just the past couple days, so hopefully its not something unique to me and we can find a solution soon, and sources with more audio channels than it can play arent just broken for Rokus going forward or something like that.

Test. This has eaten my comment twice, are google drive links not allowed? Where do i upload my log zip to?

I think I’m getting a similar issue. Started last week or so. Now whenever I try to play a movie I get “Playback was terminated by the server Conversion failed. The transcoder crashed or failed to start up” Literally nothing changed on the system.

@Cyno01

According to the forum, you did not verify your email address. The forum is strict on this with attachments.

You should be able to post now

For those joining this thread, I need DEBUG log files (Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs - Attach the ZIP) and XML captured right after recreating the problem.

There is nothing I can do without them

Hi @ChuckPA ,
Here is the full log package. Hopefully there is something in there that helps.

Rolled the server back a version (to 1.12.3.4947 from .4973), both Plex.Transcoder.exe and EasyAudioEncoder.exe are behaving completely differently than i observed with .4973, using way less CPU way less often, and im not positive, but im pretty sure before it said “Converting (throttled)” and now it just says “Converting”.

Playback hasnt crapped out yet with one of the same movies i was having issues with before, so fingers crossed. I guess ill just keep an eye on this thread and this issue and just skip a version or two, but for now its working again at least and i can finish Homecoming and Ragnarok before Infinity War tomorrow!

I’m having the same problem on NVIDIA Shield TV. My troubleshooting reveals that it has definitely something to do with subtitles.
The movie plays just fine when there are no subtitles selected. I can easily reproduce the error when I select one of the available subtitles to show.

Looking in the logs I see this section which seems to be relevant:

May 04, 2018 14:59:32.138 [3296] ERROR - [Transcoder] [eac3_mf @ 03bf17c0] could not find any MFT for the given media type

Does this mean my FFMPEG files are corrupted? This is for an MKV file and I’ve had no problems with them in the past.

@bmilner

I am not going to be able to help with windows issues other than recognizing any codec reference with _mf in it refers to the Windows-provided Microsoft Foundation class codecs.

I recommend you search in the Windows forum. I have seen that issue . Please be advised; you’ll need to provide full DEBUG (not verbose) logs captured right after recreating the issue. Fragments such as this are useless

I’ve also been getting the error quoted in this thread subject on all streaming devices. Direct play is not affected. I uninstalled version 1.13.0.5003, then installed the latest public release 1.12.3.4973 and everything works. I then allowed it to update back to 1.13.0.5003 and the problem returned. So I uninstalled again and rolled back to 1.12.3.4973 a second time. Then I changed the update channel from beta to public to maybe wait until the next version. Is this a known issue?

#15

Can any of you capture, with logs, both 1.12.3 and 1.13.0, demonstrating the difference? For the successful playback, let it play 10-15 seconds before stopping.

#16

More information as well as logs (before and after).

So on the web the video continually circle spins until I hit pause which returns the following:

On iOS mobile the stream stops almost immediately and shows this:

After uninstalling 1.13.0.5003, restarting and installing 1.12.3.4973 it all (mobile and web) works with the same episode/file.

And I apologize I realize this is a Linux thread, but the error was identical. I am running the server on Windows 7.

The fix for this has now been released as beta 1.13.0.5023 - see release notice

Hi,
I finally got this working.
As mentioned above, in my case the transcoder kept failing for certain movies only, but it was always the subtitles that were somehow the root cause.

Yesterday, I did these 2 changes and I’m not sure which one contributes more to the resolution. Either way, it works fine now.

  1. I added 32GB SSD card to my 16GB Nvidia Shield extending the internal storage.
  2. I changed the Sub-Zero agent setting to store the subtitle files next to the media

See the option 1 here

Since then, I haven’t seen the transcoder failing any more.
