Playback issues with Synology NAS

Hello All,

I use Synology DS214play as my Plex Media Server but I have a big problem with a seamless and uninterrupted playback. most of the time it goes on a permanent buffering journey and playing is simply impossible. I assume that the CPU on the NAS is not powerful enough to handle it.

My current set up is:
Synology NAS is connected to Modem via Ethernet
Smart TV is connected to Modem via Ethernet
Plex Media Server on the NAS
Plex Client on the Smart TV
My computer is in another room so it’s not possible to have the Plex server on a PC.

I’m looking for the best way to defer the heavy CPU workload to another device to have the best experience. Also I would like to be able to play 4K movies as well.
So here are my questions?

  1. Is buying a new Synology NAS a good option? what’s the best product for this matter?
  2. Will NVIDIA Shield TV pro do the job?
  3. Is it possible to use the Shield TV Pro as plex server and NAS as storage?
  4. is there any better option to resolve this?

I really appreciate your help.

Regards,
Nima

Given the CPU is only a CE5335, it’s time to take Plex off it.
The DS214play is a dual core with 1 GB of RAM.
It’s performance is such that it’s about to be removed from the NAS Compatibi

It is best to let the Syno serve the function it does best: NAS services.
Move PMS to something with a more modern processor.

The Syno is 6 years old now.

Thanks ChuckPa for your reply.

Will Nvidia Shield Pro do the job?
Do you have any suggestion what should I use for my server?

Hello @trumpy81,

Thanks for your reply.
another question regarding the best set up.
My current layout is:
Modem, NAS and TV are in living room (both NAS and TV are connected via Ethernet)
But, My office where the PC needs to go is in another room.

So, is it possible that I connect the PC via wireless to modem and have plex server on it. and everything to talk to each other through WIFI?
in other word, in this scenario

NAS and TV are connect via ethernet, but the Plex Server is connect to modem by WIFI

REgards,

@trumpy81,

I really appreciate the time and effort you put to answer my questions.
I’ve decided to go with a Mini PC option. it’s best solution for my situation as I can upgrade my current PC as well.

so, as you know most of Min PCs have integrated Intel GPU rather that dedicated. I’m just wondering would it be a problem for my case? should I spend more to get a Mini PC with dedicated GPU?

Regards,

@trumpy81,

Thanks for your reply.
I’m contemplating to go with Asus Mini PCs with Intel i5 or i7.
But still cannot figure out that if integrated GPU is enough for playing 4K videos in Plex Server or I need to go with a dedicated GPU option.
