I log into my Plex account, but the Linux desktop app does not see any of the shared media that is being shared, and is visible from other devices and machines. It wants me to download Plex Media Server to organize my media etc. which does not make sense.
Plex is a server/player system. One server streams which ever of our many client players you want to use so you don’t have to copy files to different locations.
If you want a single app system then I would use Kodi
I understand that, I have Plex server running on a dedicated machine, serving media to other devices. I thought that whats being described as a ‘desktop client’ for Linux would allow me to view the content being served from the Plex server on the network. The so-called client is not behaving as such when I want to view proprietary content being served - it wants me to install the server, which would be redundant.
If both your server and client are signed into with the same account the client should be able to get info from plex.tv about the local or remote IP of your server and try to connect to the server. The client logs should have info about it trying to connect to your server IP if it cannot find it on your network. Your other client may already have info cache from a successful connection so they can still connect. Check if your server has GDM enabled in its network settings.
Thank you for the trouble shooting advice. Due to a change in network hardware, my Plex server had stopped working, and needed to pick up a fresh IP address.
