Players can't see each other

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314
Player Version#:1.105.2.269

Hi all,
I’m trying to set up a home media server where I can play music that I have locally, controlled by phone apps.

I have a Linux machine with Plex media server installed. It also automatically logs in as a user when it boots up, and that user automatically starts the Linux Plex client (installed from Flatpak). The server computer is plugged in to an amplifier to play music directly. The music library exists locally on the server, and I can play music if I directly access the Plex Linux desktop client. So that’s all good.

The hope is to use other Plex clients, on the same local network, to play music from the server. This is where it breaks down.

So on the local network, I have:
a) the Plex media server
b) the Plex Linux desktop client, running on the same machine
c) my (Android) phone, with both Plex and Plexamp
d) my Windows desktop, with the Plex app installed from the Windows store
e) for good measure, the web app, accessed from my Windows desktop

The problem: none of the clients can see each other reliably, or at all:

  • On the Android client: I can play music from the server on the phone, but if I try to fling it I just get “No players found.”
  • On the Windows app: same, I can play music locally from the server, but if I try to fling, it’s “No players found.” Once it saw the Android phone but then lost it.
  • On the Linux desktop app: interestingly, this one can see the Android Plexamp client, and I can fling from the Linux desktop app to the Plexamp client on the phone. But I can’t see the desktop app from the phone, and can’t fling from the phone to the Linux client.

I feel like I’m missing something basic here. I think I have all of the right firewall holes set up on the Linux machine but for good measure I just turned off the firewall altogether; no change in behavior. All of the players are logged in to the same account, all of them are on the same local network, and all of them can see the server. I tried allowing insecure connections, no change.

Any advice? I feel like I’m really close to having this work, just one step away.

Thanks!

Review which clients can be controllers and receivers.

The desktop apps are controllers, not receivers, so you cannot fling to them.

You can run Plexamp on the Linux system (Download).

This was it! With PlexAmp running on the Linux machine everything works great. Thanks for the answer!
