Note when viewing logs: Sample playback occurs around 17:27 and onward

I have long had issues with the vizio version of plex failing to do playback properly. Usually, this was something I ignored, because it was only a random thing every now and then. Now, as of the last month or two, I’d say, the vizio app has become entirely unusable. It literally never plays video. At some point in any video, in any library, it will stop, usually early on, and say something like “playback failed to start in time”.

In the past, I’ve looked for solutions online, and all I ever find are report after report after report, in which multiple responses say “yeah me too”, sometimes a dev says “post logs” … and then the problem is never resolved. 90 days pass, and the issue locks. In fact, the forum post thing here suggests 3 vizio playback posts, of which 2 were locked with no responses, and the 3rd was locked with no resolution.

Things I have tried:

  • Reinstalling plex app on vizio
  • Updating plex server
  • Enabling and disabling every permutation of playback options [eg. direct streaming, direct play] in the vizio app
  • Disabling transcoding on the server
  • Using hardware acceleration for transcoding and/or video encoding, and not using it
  • Changing secure connection settings [I use Preferred, generally]
  • Enabling IPv6 [not that I’m using it]
  • Optimizing a video before playing it back
  • Clearing caches, cleaning bundles, optimizing databases
  • Checking for and installing plugin updates [even though I don’t have any playback related plugins]
  • Giving the transcoder as much juice as it wants [6/12 cpu @4.6GHz, with 48GB RAM, and video card]
  • Disabling DLNA server
  • Looking through the database for weird stuff

What I see in the logs:

  • I set the vizio tv to log, but it doesn’t seem to create additional files.
  • Only Plex Transcoder Statistics and Plex Media Server seem to have updated during or after playback

The Vizio app has long since been unsupported. Doubt you will get any fixes. Have you seen this? Vizio SmartCast Plex app is too basic
