Playback problems: "Plex Server isn't fast enough"

Hey guys!

I just faced a rather strange problem while watching/streaming a movie (mkv-file) from my nas: every 5-10 minutes or so i get a message that my “plex server isn’t fast enough to stream the video”. Thats awkward since I dont have those problems with other mkv-files which are much bigger in size and bitrate.

Here’s some information of the file that causes problems:

Container: Matroska
Codec: AVC (Main @L4)
Videostream: 5800 kbps (AVC Main @L4)
Audiostream: 662 kbps (AAC)
Overall bitrate: 7125 kbps
File size: 5,9 GB

…in comparison a video file that works flawlessly:

Container: Matroska
Codec: AVC (Main @L4)
Videostream: 12,3 Mbps (AVC High@L4.1)
Audiostream: 1509 kbps (DTS)
Overall bitrate: 15,7 Mbps
File size: 15,1 GB

Note that the latter video is TWICE as big as the first one which caused problems.
Im curious too hear if anyone of you had the same kind of problems and if there is any solution to it. It has to be a Plex specific problem since I’ve had no issues with that file using other clients like Infuse or Kodi.

Hoping someone can help!

Cheers

What are the resolution and frames per second of each video? And what client are you using to playback? Are both videos direct-playing?

Oh I forgot about the fps sry:

both videos run at 23.976 fps.

As for the client I usually use my Apple TV 4 but tested the Plex-playback on my PS4 as well. Same problem there!

Anyone ? :frowning:

Check your logs for “MDE” and see why it has decided to transcode, then check for “Speed” and see if it dips below 1.0. If it goes below 1.0 it isn’t keeping up fast enough.

I checked the log files (hope the “dlna server” was the right one) but couldn’t find none of the terms you suggested :frowning:

You need to look at the Plex Media Server.log - not the DLNA log.
