Hello, when streaming to an apple TV4K over a gigibit LAN connection I get a message saying that your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video. Doesn’t make sense to me since I am using a Gigabit Lan connection. So I logged into my plex server (Windows 10) via Remote Desktop and tried to stream the video locally on the server. Video will also not play on the server. Jumping onto the Activity dashboard I see that my connection locally is only 37Mbps. I am trying view a 1080p H.264 file (a bluray rip to an MKV). What is really interesting is when I view a lower resolution file 480p H.264 (a dvd rip to an MKV) my connection locally is now 10 Gbps and there is no problem viewing the video. Why would my connection speed be different depending on the resolution of the video I am trying to watch. I would think that locally on the server, all connections should be 10 Gbps. I think this difference is behind the your connections to the server is not fast enough error message I am getting on the Apple TV 4K.

The bandwidth information showing on the Now Playing dashboard isn’t so much referring to the available network bandwidth but the avg. bitrate for the ongoing stream. IIRC Plex will display an unrealistic high bitrate if the video in question hasn’t been properly analyzed (your 480p DVD rip will most likely not be averaging at 10 Gbps).

Clients will give you that error message if they don’t get the stream packages fast enough – interpreting this is due to an issue with the network. Another root cause could be your server isn’t powerful enough to send the packages in real time. This can happen if your stream requires transcoding and your CPU isn’t up to the job.

Thanks for the reply. In that case I have a feeling that it maybe server hardware related. I am running Plex on desktop hardware on windows 10 pro.

I thought this hardware would be up to the task, and the task manager barely moves when Plex starts streaming. Would you recommend that I upgrade the hardware? If so, what should I go with?
