I’m experiencing a serious sync issue across all my Plex clients, and it’s been going on for a few days now. The apps have stopped syncing watch status and playback progress properly on all platforms I use — including Google TV, Samsung apps, and the macOS desktop app.
Here are the main issues:
When I delete a movie from the server, it still shows up in the clients — marked as “in progress” and halfway through playback.
New movies do not save my playback position. If I pause and exit, the movie starts over from the beginning when I return.
Even after watching part of a film, the progress is not saved, and it shows as unwatched or starts from zero again.
So far, I’ve tried the following:
Optimizing the database
Cleaning bundles and emptying trash
Running all maintenance tasks under “Troubleshooting” in the server settings
None of this has fixed the issue.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there anything else I can try? This is seriously affecting my ability to use Plex as usual.
[UPDATE]
I ended up deleting the database and rebuilding the library from scratch — that finally solved the issue.
That said, I can’t help but feel like Plex isn’t actively fixing things anymore. There haven’t been meaningful updates lately, and issues like this make me wonder:
Is Plex just dying on us?
Or is there still active development and support happening?
Would love to hear from the devs or anyone with insight.
It would definitely help to give a bit more information specific to your setup. As it stands I have no idea what your server is installed on just from reading your post. You’ve tagged server-mac, and server-nvidia-shield - so which is the server running on?
Debug logs will also help immensely just so we can see what the server is doing, maybe client logs would help too. I don’t have this problem on Linux, I know that doesn’t help you other than to reaffirm that this is more of an isolated issue.
Have you tried doing any research into the problem? There is also AI that can be used if your “Google-fu” isn’t great, it can do it for you.
When deleting a movie, depending on how it’s deleted the server needs to know about it - whether it’s deleted from within Plex or manually then scanning your libraries again. The clients should all update after that pretty quickly.
Playback position, I feel like this is a database issue - deleting your database is the nuclear option, my suggestion would be to use ChuckPa’s DBRepairTool which can be found in the forum.
Plex is definitely not dying… just maybe going in a direction we didn’t expect.
Just take a look at the forum…there’s definitely active development and support happening. This forum I feel is more community based than anything - Plex employees will jump in where they can or see fit, but most of the “support” is usually provided by fellow users from what I’ve seen.
I am also having this issue and it started around a week ago. I made some fairly significant changes to music collection and Plexamp has stopped working which I think is just a coincidence. However TV and Movies definitely do not remember where I left off.
