Playback random frame stutter caused by dropped frames

This seems to be getting worse for me. Seriously considering moving away. It’s infuriating to watch the stutter.

The new player worked great for so long.

Mine primarily happens on 1080i. Disabling new video player seems to work. I know that says for Apple TV but it’s happening on Nvidia Shield as well.

I’m getting the same issue. I just switched my ATV settings to have frame rate matching on. I’ll update on that front. At first I thought this was strictly my remux blu-rays causing this but it doesn’t matter if it’s a blu-ray strumming along at 37Mbps, a 480p remux dvd at 8Mbps, or an old home movie VHS rip running at 2Mbps. You get the picture. Is everyone still getting this? Found a solution? Thanks!

Changed the ATV setting to match frame rate and it hasn’t happened since

I reset video and audio settings within the Apple TV settings a few days ago and all seems to have been fixed :man_facepalming:t2:. At least I have no stutter and direct play again.

I have changed nothing and it’s back :pensive: but not as bad as it was before.

Apologies for potato quality, but took a video. Stutter happens towards the end. Click the below for link:

I’m having the exact same issue started happening a couple of months ago. It doesn’t seem to matter what the media is, even live TV.

I haven’t tried reverting to the old player.

PMS Version 1.20.2.3370 with the latest AppleTV app.

Well this is steadily getting worse with each update. So frustrating.

Here is another video with the Apple TV debug overlay over the top. All is going fine until towards the end of the video when 107 frames are dropped in a matter of seconds.

(Hope the above link works).

It continues to happen afterwards as well.

Here is a zoomed in photo as well from when it starts to happen:

@stridemat thanks for sharing your video. Again, mine is doing the -exact- same thing and the stuttering seems to be getting worse and longer as each day goes by.

So any idea how to get some dev input on this?

Tap tap tap. Is this thing on? :microphone:

I too am noticing pretty annoying stutter when watching broadcast 1080i29.97 video on Apple TV in direct playback. NVIDIA, PC, and Roku direct plays fine. I have Apple TV set to match frame rate and content in its settings (things are about unwatchable without that on).

Got the same thing going on. Just don’t know if it’s related to dropped frames or not.

I’ve been seeing this on Xbox One with direct stream. Really irritating with pans.

Anyone know how to get some dev input with this?

@sergiou87. Any ideas?

FWIW, the stutters seems to also relate to a spike in CPU usage. Don’t know the causality though.

Running htop on unraid, at the exact time the stutter happens all these Plex services jump to the top of the cpu usage list. Normal usage is 2% ish. Strangely disk usage also peaks.

@stridemat Are you still having this issue consistently?

Last night I realised that I haven’t picked up on the stuttering in a while. I then watched some live TV and an hour-long TV episode and didn’t notice it even though I was looking for it.
