Using Windows Server.
Truly bizarre here - random movies are not playing on my Apple TV/Roku devices.
If I use Infuse or Play directly on plex, I have no issues, but randomly the “play queue” will not load. Any ideas?
I’ve tried:
Cleaning up the database
Refreshing metadata
Rescanning the library
Multiple shutdowns/restarts
Is there any way to track what’s going on here? the movie never seems to “hit” from the player to the server to start loading.

Random movies encountered the following error: “Couldn’t retrieve the play queue for this item. Please try again.”
If I remove the movie from the library and then re-add it, the movie will play without any issues.
However, if I update the poster, the error reappears.
This is ridiculous and has been going on for seemingly years.
I have one hard drive that the movies won’t play - but only on my iphone and Apple TV. They play FINE in a web browser.
Also - I found a post from MYSELF back in January and my FIX was to create a whole new Movie library, which fixed the problem. But here I am in the WORKING library running into the same problem.
The files play FINE on a PC playing them directly.
I had read that running ANALYZE on the library would fix it, but I’m about 35 hours into that process and tried to play a bunch of files that have been ANALYZED and still getting the same “playback stopped couldn’t retrieve play queue” error on my phone and Apple TV.
THERE HAS TO BE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THE ISSUE IS. There are thread after thread after thread of this same problem here and on Reddit and sometimes ANALYZE fixes it for people, but not always. Sometimes removing the file from plex and bringing it back fixes things.
But these are not FIXES they are temporary fixes, and they don’t always work.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE WITH APPLE PRODUCTS NOT PLAYING A LARGE AMOUNT OF MOVIES FOR SEEMINGLY NO GOOD REASON???
I’ve “fixed” the issue on my end twice now. I don’t have any explanation why this worked, but here’s some elements of this issue I discovered:
Again, for the movies that can’t play on an Apple TV/Roku/iPhone (may be other clients but that’s all I have), they can play on the web player on my PC
I thought maybe it was a HDD error, but all the movies play perfectly fine directly locally
I have several folders that point to my movies library, and this issue only seems to happen to one directory at a time (very strange). For example, I have my movies library posting to a “Blu-ray” folder. When I had this issue, nothing within the “Blu-ray” directory would play, all others were fine. Very odd to me.
The only way I was able to fix the queue error was to remove the “problem” folder from the library and re-add it.
UPDATE - The ANALYZE of all the movies did nothing. Files from that one Hard drive still didn’t play.
So I bit the bullet and removed those folders from Plex Movie server. Emptied the trash. Ran Clean Bundles and then re-added the folders and MIRACULOUSLY the files play again.
No changes to the files - the changes are all in PLEX metadata or database or something.
But this has been happening to people for YEARS so Plex can we get this fixed please?
I’ve also run into this exact issue, movies just randomly don’t play on apple devices but work fine elsewhere. I’ve been lucky and a quick restart of the plex server has fixed the issue but a long term solution would be nice rather than daily server reboots.
