Playing TV shows where a single file contains many episodes

I have some Naruto disks that when ripped, create a single file with all the episodes on the disk, in that file. I can name them Naruto S01E1-E4.mkv and get plex to recognize all four episodes without issue.

The feature I would like added is, to be able to set the timestamp for the start and end of each episode. Currently If I play any episode it will play the file from the beginning.

This is a duplicate request. Please use the search.

I’m not asking how to split the actual file, I am asking for the ability to tell plex where the start and end of each video resides…

It doesn’t make sense to have the ablity to name the file as mentioned above, and not be able to click on an episode later in the file and have it play at that location.

This is the duplicate request that was being referred to:

I know, but this is the better way to deal with this. If you are going to invest the time to determine the timestamps where the episodes change, you might as well split the file at these timestamps properly.

It might even be easier, because chances are that there are already ‘chapter marks’ at these places (at least if you ripped it with makemkv).

This is a far more user friendly and time saving solution to performing a hard cut.

When a show has been recorded from TV there are usually no chapter marks available, so then you have to deal with a key-frame that may not be at the right time-code, meaning you have to cut before / after the actual point, plus this takes actual time to save back out with trial and error and then rename the new files etc.

I have 150 double episodes for a show, so this is a massive effort in comparison to being able to stamp a time-code into the Plex info as a ‘helper’ item to tell it where to start playback of the file when E02 is selected. (as the code already understands multiple EXX or Exx-Eyy, it could add additional time-code fields in the UI)

This could be added to the ‘File’ tab in the Info Pane as it could appear in the same file block so the timestamp is linked to its particular file.

OttoKerner,

I have to disagree. So many issues come up when splitting rips of dvd’s. For example preserving all the subtitles. The program would have to recalculate the time code for all of them. I haven’t seen one that saves the subtitles. There are other issues but safe to say, its not always worth spiting the file.
