Playlist sorting and searching feature request

You have no idea how much I need this…

Dear Plex Development Team, I keep looking closely at each new Plex version release hoping the playlist sort functionality requested in this thread will be included. But alas, despite many requests over 5 years it continues to be MIA. It is a fundamental requirement for me [and I see many others] and I ask that you give me the courtesy of advising a target implementation date. I pay each month for a Plex Pass [and I expect many others in this thread] and I hope you can bear this also in mind when considering the priority of this development. Kind Regards, Michael Power.

I’ll also throw down my vote for this feature.

While movies can be made a collection that has sorting options, music cannot. I have a playlist that I’ve carried over from device to device and one service to another that has between 400 & 500 tracks. I always sort them by title and go through the old/existing device and the new line by line to make sure the playlists match.

Google Play might have been a pain to permanently re-sort a playlist, but it could be done. I bought the lifetime Plex Pass, and I’ve used the service for years. I’ve never used the music feature much for this reason, but with Google Play gone, I’m back to looking this over.

I know how to make the equivalent of “smart” playlists and quite a few other tricks, but sorting has no “trick” to do it besides manually reordering. Man, that’s a pain. I’ve done it. I hate it.

And while I’ve got your attention, how about the ability to use a playlist in a custom filtered playlist? You might say “A playlist of a playlist? Are you insane?” That one playlist I mentioned above? On my iPod, I have a smart playlist of that playlist to not replay any track in that list that was played in the last seven days. If Plex could do that, it’d be the only thing I use.

I’m trying to catch up on this suggestion. From the looks of it there’s quite some mix of different suggestions in this thread.

As for the original suggestion (OP)

This seems to have been implemented some time ago. You can search playlists and the playlists view/library can be sorted.

Example 1: Search results showing playlists Example 2: Sorting options for playlits

Therefore I consider the actual suggestion implemented!

As for a lot of the other topics.

I’ve been going through the thread… some of the posts discuss filtering/sorting inside a playlist. That’s obviously possible for smart playlists which inherit their order from their filter settings.
For “dumb”/classic playlists there’s other suggestions which already address this topic (incl. options to support a more extensive table view) – e.g. Feature Request: Playlist tabular view with sort-able/select-able/filter-able columns for showing metadata

Therefore I suggest to comment/vote/push those side-tracks in the respective suggestions in order to avoid distracting/dispersing votes.

As for discussions about individual missing sort options, I suggest to create follow-up suggestions. Otherwise those missing aspects will be drowned and won’t be noticed (even if keeping that thread open).

That’s not my point.
There’s a feature suggestion to allow a more extensive list view for playlists with an option to filter and sort them (see above).

Searching for playlists and sorting of playlists (=the playlist, not the playlist’s content) is implemented. At least that’s how I’m reading the OP – I’m aware the discussion in this thread is subsequently going in lots of other directions, including searching/sorting of the content of a playlist.

As for your specific points:

Sorting of smart playlists:

  1. click > Edit Filters
  2. keep the actual filters but change the order of your tracks
    • for video playlists: by selecting the expected order from the dropdown
    • for music playlists: by clicking the column header that you want use for ordering the smart playlist
  3. click Update Playlist

… just a list of tracks

That’s what playlists are. If you want an instrument to organize your music you can use collections. You can create regular and smart collections for artists, albums and tracks.

Hence my original post/question, no “forcing” of a perspective… just trying to get it sorted.
The OP is asking for

I’d like to ask for the feature that would allow for searching and sorting of playlists.

We can search and sort playlists.
We cannot search and sort the content of a playlist (except I manually reorder a regular playlist or change the definition of a smart playlist).

If this suggestion is about searching/sorting of playlists, it is implemented.
If it is about searching/sorting of content inside a playlist it’s not implemented.

There’s tons of suggestions that “evolved” over time with expectations being all over the place while the OP had a very specific and limited scope. That doesn’t make the discussion “wrong” – sometimes it’s helpful to rebase the suggestion thread to avoid users from getting frustrated if they vote for the perceived content of the suggestion and don’t get it if it’s implemented (and subsequently e.g. create “dedicated suggestions for those side-requests”).
That’s the only aim of my post – no malicious intent.

Let’s curb it down a bit. It feels like this is getting way too emotional.
I’m not sure if I’m simply not explaining myself well or if I hit some red button of yours that makes you read some meaning in my posts that wasn’t intended from my end.

I’m certainly not not pushing to close this suggestion for the purpose of closing it. This is merely to clarify the actual meaning/target of this suggestion and to confirm if we’re actually still talking about the original suggestion or something else.

Trying to read through everything. I would like to be able to add songs to a playlist. Some songs I will add directly because I know I like and some I might be listening to something new and would like to add it to that Playlist. I would like to have a “my music” playlist of songs I want downloaded to my phone. If i come across something new, I can add to playlist.

The issue is that it adds it to the bottom of the playlist. I cant sort. I would like to be able to sort the playlist for instance by artist. lets say I added a bunch of queen songs to "my music: playlist. I cant sort and go and just look at all the songs by that artist.

It makes it hard to know what songs are in that playlist. I use Prism app and it works great but I am trying to switch over to plexamp because it will download a smart playlist. I want to be able to keep a “master” playlist of songs I like to have download on my phone.

I’m struggling with this issue. I have very large music playlists, but I periodically find songs that have been added to the wrong playlist. Unfortunately it seems to be almost impossible to find the item(s) to be removed from the playlist – simply scrolling though thousands of songs hoping to spot them is practically impossible

Here’s the issue I have where I require better sorting. I have all 500 albums of the Rolling Stone top 500, and there’s no way to sort in the list order. A playlist just dumps all the songs with no way to sort the albums which technically works but is going to be unwieldly with all 500:

and using the collections tab allows you to see the albums, but not list them in numerical order of the list, only the library default as far as I can tell (these two should be swapped)

Plex just can’t handle this from what I can tell, and it should be pretty simple? I don’t even know where to begin to start a smart list that would order them correctly.

That raises the question based on what information available to Plex you’d want to sort it?

  • Playlists on their own are not designed to visually organize albums – while you can add all those albums, you’ll end up having to sort the individual tracks manually (again… this is already due to the fact that there’s no “this song is #47 of the rolling stone’s top 500 albums” information inside Plex).
  • Collections can be visually organized by albums and dragged into order (custom order).

TL;DR: even if Plex is adding more sorting capabilities into collections/playlists – your attempt is currently doomed to fail because there’s no metadata to sort your albums / album tracks by the RS top 500 albums.

“AlbumTitle” is all the metadata I would need if you could change the view of the playlist from “Songs” to “Albums”. Just add them in order manually, or move the “album” as needed like you can with a standard video playlist. It’s being stuck with only the song option that is the problem.

The option to sort/view by “Song title” (as it is currently), “Album title” and “Artist” would probably be all the sorting anyone would need? Maybe an upfront choice when creating a playlist?

What you describe is covered by collections – playlists are about playback, collections about organizing your media.
Albums in an album-collection can be dragged in a custom order just like those for movies.

I created a collection using the tag “rs500”. I’ve added 3 albums to it, but there is no way I can find to drag them into the order I want. I have the “Advanced” collection ordering set to “custom” and I can still only get them to display in order of release date or alphabetical Is there a link to a guide on how to actually do this?

I can move songs around all I want in a playlist, but I can’t find a way to do that in a collection.

Scratch this. Doesn’t work on my qnap but I can move them when launched on the web browser. I’m guessing a new feature?

Correct; this was introduced ~1 month ago with Plex Web 4.60.1 which is not yet part of the bundled scope (PMS still bundles 4.59.x, same as Plex for Mac/Windows)

+1 I don’t get it what’s so difficult to have a playlist just flipped by the order to be played? (Newst or oldest added first). This is basically the easiest thing todo.
