The requester made a long list of playlist sort features including Sort inside a playlist
So if playlists are about playback, then wouldn’t it be more important to be able to sort items in a playlist to the user’s desire? What is so difficult about admitting that Plex doesn’t allow playlist items to be sorted and that it isn’t technically difficult to make it happen? Your obstinance on this thread reeks of trolling users who are seeking a pretty simple solution to a glaring problem.
I have encountered this type of attitude so much in my Plex research (which I only have to do in the first place because the software is so buggy)
I can’t believe they would bother creating Playlist or Collections features without allowing you to organize them how you want. If you have media that consists of years worth of TV shows and movies, you’d have to organize it manually, and even THEN the playlist feature bugs out and won’t let you drag & drop to reorder files when the playlist is too long. You can drag and drop all you want, the playlist just sits there and won’t move files according to your actions.
I can’t believe how clunky this software is, and I regret ever using it whenever I try to ask a question. Anyone responding always does so with evasive non-answers, almost as if it’s your fault for not understanding that this software is incredibly limited and simply not intuitive.
This software is useless if you have more than a dozen movies in your collection.
I too have been hoping for a playlist sort feature… I check this thread every 6 months and still nothing. I have literally spent hours sorting alphabetically by hand since my playlists can be hundreds of songs long… It must be extremely hard to implement in their coding otherwise we would have seen it years ago.
Just did some googling as I have been putting together playlists that go by decade 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s etc.
Having a lot of compilation albums it can be tough to remember if I have already added a song to one of the playlists and can’t believe there isn’t an easy way to search the list. Am I missing something can you not actually search music playlist? How do if I know if I have added x song when the list has 100s of songs in it?
Playlist sort in Plex is horrible and has been for years (as can be witnessed from this ancient thread). It has gotten worse (for Movie/TV collections) because now the apparent “default” sort when attempting to add a movie to a playlist is either by “Updated Date” (which seems USELESS in the vast majority of scenarios) or RANDOM.
Either way, having to manually scroll through the list of playlists and search (BY HAND) for the proper playlist if you have more than ~3 is AWFUL. Making it worse, if you just use the Create option to add a movie to a playlist which DOES already exist, this will CREATE A NEW ONE separate from the existing one.
Does Plex have any understanding of USEABILITY?
In the latest version of Plex for Synology playlists cannot be sorted. The drop downs do not work. I regret updating to the latest version: can this be changed back?
There’s a simple fix for this (to me). Simply add a “playlist” column option in the music library grid. Then we could at least go there and sort and search. It would be great if each track would also display what playlists they are included in when clicked on. But, that might be asking too much, lol.
Fully agree
And also addings Songs to Playlists is even worst!
I love Plex, but why the hell are they doing nothing. I am also a software developer in my profession. I can well estimate the effort, which can really not be high to implement this actually self-evident feature. Actually, this is an bad issue and not a feature request.
Not sure it 100% fits this request, but I’d love to be able to search by, or set a playlist of my hi-res audio only - can’t find a way of doing that currently!
Note to all: Plex apparently does not read nor care about fixing issues like this which is likely a single-line change in their code. HORRIBLE usability continues to be the norm. Pathetic.
If you ARE listening, Plex, how about just opening up the source so those of us with development experience can fix it ourselves, huh? Would probably take less than 1 hour (simply because WE DON’T KNOW THE CODEBASE AT ALL).
I agree… I’ve been here since 2012 and I’m surprised this feature isn’t standard equipment on the sticker. Now if the CTRL-F search would work within the browser that would help… But alas. No playlist sort, CTRL-F is a no go. Sort would be great for duplicates at a minimum.
Yes please. This is such a huge frustration in Plex which is otherwise wonderful.
Need to be able to search and sort playlists.
Have spent the better part of the last 6 weeks moving a decent chunk of music into plex and started now looking at building a playlist.
HOW CAN SORTING OR SEARCHING NOT BE INCLUDED. Shockingly poor design decision. Moreover, the fact this feature request exists since 2015 leads me conclude plex has no plans to add it.
@elan any hope for some sort of sorting of playlists in Plex ?
Hell, just being able to sort by the usuals like…
- Date added to playlist
- Name
- Song lenght
Would be dope.
We can already sort the playlists generated by filters, like <3 Tracks, Everything, Fresh <3, Recently Added and Recently Played - but nothing else.
And sorry for tagging you directly, i just love the everlovingfuck out of PlexAmp, just hate i can’t sort my playlists by Date Added, so i see the latest at the top, instead of the bottom ![]()
Edit://
I am talking about stuff added to a playlist, not the playlists themselves - they’re sorted by latest used, which is fine with me, and can be sorted by name, date added etc. It’s the items INSIDE the playlist I’m talking about ![]()
I believe the playlist implementation is straight up awful/unusable. It’s also the only way to combine TV/Movies on a single view (i.e. Marvel Universe as my best example, but Star Wars as well). You cannot multi-select+move, the UI is abysmal.
Is Plex going to provide any feature update for playlists in the future? Is there any commitment I should read about somewhere that I missed?
My old thread: Currating Large Playlists
To be fair, you can kinda do that by giving a collection the same name in both TV and Movies.
Say you make one in each called: Marvel Cinematic Universe
And add your TV series and Movies to the same named collection.
It’ll show both, but of a cludgy workaround but yeah ![]()
After that you can re-arrange them inside each individual collection
But you can’t take individual episodes or seasons out from what I’ve found. Seasons are the most important, but even in Marvel, the proper watch order splits w/ a movie between a season a few times in there…
Basic playlist management to me is still a must anyway, for music alone - and I think there are real use cases for tv/movies as well.
Yes this is a must, with a play count too!
