Hi, maybe I’m just blind but I’ve noticed that there’s no options to sort the items in a playlist unless I want to manually sort a single item. Is it possible to add a feature to be able to sort a playlist items by Artist, Year release, Album, or Title, or anything else?
Need to be able to search and sort playlists (no, not using smart playlists).
Given it’s been 10 years since this was opened, I assume it will never happen, but I’ve recently abandoned streaming and this is pretty rough.
Large playlists are unmanageable without this basic feature. Really makes Plex useless for managing one’s music collection. The non-responsiveness of the company is baffling, I guess the maintainers must all be happy with the AI elevator musak they’re being served by Spotify.
I mostly use playlists to hold an entire discography by a given band & all related solo works/side projects.
For example, I want a “Genesis, etc.” playlist that holds all the Genesis albums but also the Peter Gabriel albums & other solo stuff by Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks etc.
When I look at the playlist I created, it’s just a list of thousands of individual tracks that aren’t in any meaningful order. You’d think at the very least they’d be in the order they appear on the albums when they’re sorted chronologically as they are in my main library, but no. Completely random.
Personally, I need to see the complete albums, preferably sorted by Album Artist.
I guess playlists are broadly designed for gathering together a bunch of tracks for certain occasions like being at the gym, out running, driving, etc. but their usefulness could be massively extended with a few more options.
Bumping this request. Clearly there’s support / interest given the ongoing thread beginning so long ago
I like to listen to full albums in track order. If I want to move an album around, I have to drag and drop individual tracks.
We should at least have an option to multi-select so that we only have to watch the slow drag rate once per album instead of for every track.
A decade later and we still need a better way to manually sort the songs listed in a playlist.
Sorting is one of the first functions taught to programmers. It is a basic function of app design.
Still very much wanting this.
can we make this happen 10 years later please?
Well that was a lie.
Nearly 10 years since this thread was started and you still cannot sort playlists… Wild.
any day now?
Just checking in here…
From the recent fireside chat:
This is a problem that I’m noticing in multiple Plex player applications for my Music library. Specifically I am using Plexamp on Android, Plex player for Windows & Linux, and sometimes Web Player.
When I’m trying to manage a large playlist, all of the tracks are, by default, sorted by the time they were added to the playlist. I do see that I can drag-and-drop to reorder the tracks, but this list has over 600 tracks. Drag-and-drop reordering is not a feasible solution to my sorting problem.
Plex has been wonderful for my Movies & TV Shows libraries. But the Music library feature is just seriously lacking when it comes to playlist management. If I accidentally add duplicate tracks to my playlist, I have no way to sort, find, and remove one of them. If I need to review which songs I’ve added from a specific artist, there simply isn’t a tool to display this information.
Can we expand these features for better usability? If you look at the popular music streaming services (Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, etc.), all of them have some pretty solid playlist sorting tools. Here’s what I’m referring to:
- Spotify has a nice big dropdown that allows sorting your playlist tracks by Title, Artist, Album, Recently Added, Duration, all of these with Ascending or Descending order. A custom order option is also available if you want to manually sort your tracks.
- Deezer has a pretty simple Columns & Rows setup, and you can just click the column header to sort Ascending or Descending by that column. Columns include Track name, Artist, Album, Added, and Duration.
- Plex just ain’t got that yet, and I think it’d be really cool if we added it
Mfw discovering the megathread already started on this

Yes! I emigrated from Spotify and thought I was missing something. Searching and searching and searching… I couldn’t believe a seemingly mundane feature was missing and realized just how awful having large playlists were without this feature. I have up actually making them, I have so many half-abandoned ones. It became too much to drag the newest AFI album ALL the way up to where I had the other AFI albums. Then after a LONG time I found this thread and have planted myself here every since.
The best thing to do is manage your music with Strawberry or Swinsian or whatever works for you. Create and maintain your M3U playlists with one of these apps and then import into Plex.
Even if Plex did release some basic playlist sorting, I’d still use a 3rd-party tool to manage my playlists because Swinsian will always be more powerful.
I’m assuming this advice has already been given in a thread dating back to 2015, but I thought I’d offer it again. Don’t wait for Plex.
Does Plex even support m3u import yet?
I just waisted 45 minutes of my life trying to have chatgpt tell me there is a sort option to a music playlist only to find this thread that has been open for 10 years and no traction on implementing. Wow!
