Arguments aside, are you an employee of Plex? I’ve never seen someone who works for a company who speaks this way to its customers. You have our money and now…what? You can speak to us this way and tell us we are being unreasonable because we don’t want your “ad server” feces anywhere near our content? Nearly every forum I’ve visited, there is a moderator who doesn’t answer questions, but attacks any naysayers for daring to complain about something they see as wrong. Why do you do this? Are those who manage Plex fine with you responding this way or are we no longer customers now that you have our money?
Does Plex not give a damn about what WE want? No matter what response you return with, nothing justifies the way you speak to us. How can I get into contact with the CEO? Is it still Keith Valory?
Also, you write that there are others who “want” these features. Really? I don’t see any such post in the forum. I’ve looked and I don’t see that anyone has asked for these features.
Rarely people voice their happiness about something. People come to forums because they have issues and seek assistance. Or rant about how useless the product is
Do you really have issues finding where he was being rude? You saw no problem with all of his responses (all of them) to all inquiries as acceptable for someone in customer support? Not a single instance? So if I were to call somewhere and tell them I have a problem with the service, the way these moderators reply is always okay? Am I really going to have to go line by line and show them to you? I would have been offended had they of been addressed to me. My hat goes off to the customers who didn’t launch a tirade of curse words in response.
I’m glad you like the features. You are 1 person in a sea of anger. Perhaps I’ll find your support for these changes elsewhere in the forums as well.
I still stand by my question I asked. Where are these people posting their desire for these features, to add this bastardized, opt in annoyance? I want to see where the voices complaining about these ads here are vastly outnumbered by the desire for this change. The moderators, in their replies, keep insisting this outpouring for these features exists. Let’s see it, then. Perhaps you know where I can find it. Where did you put your opinion?
You won’t find many of them here. Everyone knows very few people come to a forum to cheer when they like something.
Plex just became a standalone service. Users no longer need a friend with a server. It’s been trending that way for years, and I assure you, this won’t be the last “feature” you won’t have any control over. I guess you missed the rollout of News, Podcasts, and WebShows?
I think most people wouldn’t mind getting the features you ( @TeknoJunky ) suggested in those posts you linked. The thing people have a problem with is ad-supported content being mixed in with our curated ad-free content in the clients of our users.
I’m the Chair for The Association of Ad Haters International so if there is any of it where I can see it - there’s gonna be trouble. Ever since I disabled it, that hasn’t happened.
As long as they keep their shenanigans on the other side of that switch that disables it - I’m fine.
I understand why it’s on. It’s a PITA getting it turned off for Friends and Family, but I understand why it’s on.
I have left it on my server (for my home users), and I have not seen any ads mixed in within MY content, nor have any users (which range from 20’s to 80’s) complained about, or been confused about, the extra content.
Regular shared users have their own control to turn off or on as desired.
Well, having a disagreement isn’t so bad…what looks bad is a company who allows someone to be a MOD who hasn’t even brushed up on the Companies histort. Plex was too, absolutely an open source project. Infact it started as a freeware project and was forked off of Kodi. A bit of history if I may…
" Plex began as a freeware hobby project in December 2007 when developer Elan Feingold created a media center application for his Apple Mac. He decided to port the media player XBMC (now known as Kodi) to Mac OS X.[3] Around the same time, Cayce Ullman and Scott Olechowski—software executives who had recently sold their previous company to Cisco—were also looking to port XBMC to OSX, and noticed Feingold’s progress via XBMC online forums." -taken from Plex’s very own Wkiki PAge.
So in the future I dont mind MODS who arent afraid to mix it up with a user…but dude you embarass yourself if you dont know what the FACTS Are. Please keep in mind, I do not wish to make anyone look foolish. I was simply stating a 100% historical FACT. Its verifiable by anyone. But I didnt even need to verify it because I was there man. I remember. Were you? Obviously not. But hey we all learn stuff every dat right? No hard feelings? Just think now one day you’ll be on the correct side of the discussion now! And That is a cool thing My friend!. Hey do you think I could get a Free T-shirt or something? Some Swag? A Gaming version of Nvidia Shield would be Sweet! or we could go nostalgic and do an XBOX? celebrate your newly discovered herratiage? Thanks though for admitting you are wrong, which I know you will do now and I look so forward to my Prize! Plex wouldnt just Not admit a wrong? I mean You provided users with a false account right? That is not good business my friend. Its borderline Bernie Madoff isn’t it, well no not quite. But had I invested…Well that would not have been good. I am sorry to the innocent bystanders who had to witness the Truth emerge. I feel like Ive made a life long friendship now. So if you are new…Go ahead Try Plex, the once open source software turned private. Remember Web-Tools? That was awsome! And so you still support Sub Zero or did that get edged out now? Does Warner provide something comparable for Subtitles and how much is that per word?
Just wanted to jump in and clear up some misunderstanding. Plex started as a media player only, a port of XBMC, so this was open source. However, this discussion is specifically referring to Plex Media Server (PMS). PMS has never been open source. @5stringdeath’s comment was related to this discussion, so his comment is correct.
Your comment is also correct if you are discussing clients, but that’s not the topic here.
I wonder if Google would start by default showing pictures from let’s say stock photos sites, inside your Pictures Gallery. Like every other picture, a picture from one stock photos site. Of course, with ads. Would that be OK? C’mon Google needs some money also.
I wonder if CCTV manufacturers would start streaming your home IP cameras to let’s say…phub. Would that be OK? C’mon, those people also need money.
Of course, everyone is civil and users will have a very deep buried option to disable this. But by default, will be enabled, eventually without any notice, after an update. Just remember to check for new options that will re-enable it. after every update.
“But it is free. Why complain?”
STDs are also free. Doesn’t make them good.
If the desktop client is open source, it should be fairly straightforward to fork and patch it to remove / hide these services. It’s probably also possible to write an extension for Chrome to hide them in the web player.
