Everytime I watch a video encoded with HEVC my Samsung galaxy tab s2 crashes, if I’m not quick enough to switch to ‘Convert to…’. Plex shouldn’t even try to play that and covert automatically, but it does. Some of my other devices are more forgiving and simply refuse to play, but adjusting it manually everytime is downright annoying.
This feature is already implemented in Kodi Plex add-on (‘Enable x265’) Same thing is badly needed for Android. I think it would be a good workaround (ideally Plex would convert automatically).
EDIT: Turns out the problem is with 10bit HEVC. Both my devices (Huawei p8 and galaxy tab s2) play hevc without any issues at all.
Interesting.
I have an (at least) 3-4 year old generic Vodafone Android tablet that was a freebie with a phone contract way back.
It has zero issues direct playing anything in HEVC.
Thanks for checking. I just tried playing from Plex DLNA via Bubble UpnP and it worked, although it stuttered occasionally, so it appears that it’s not powerful enough, but at least it doesn’t crash.
No worries.
Though I don’t watch too much stuff on my mobile. just tried on my S7 and that direct plays too.
It may be worth posting as an issue.
One other thing I did think of. I also have a Shield and one or two HEVC files do seem to have an issue and thats probably the settings I used in Handbrake. Oddly those files also play back fine on the mobile devices.
Anyway I hope you manage to get it sorted.
Turns out the problem for me (at least on tabs2) is not HEVC, but 10bit HEVC. Turns out 8bit files play perfectly fine. My device, apparently does not support 10bit and that’s why it crashes. I don’t know if it’s Plex or Android, but seems like it currently it doesn’t take into account 10bit vs 8bit when deciding how to play the file.
