Please officially Support Debian 12 for Hardware Accleration (and a Flatpak)

Hello Plex team,

As a dedicated Plex Pass subscriber, I’d like to make a couple of suggestions to enhance the Plex experience for Linux users, particularly those using Debian 12.

Currently, hardware acceleration is officially supported only on Ubuntu and Fedora Link to official docs. However, many in the Linux community have grown wary of relying on Redhat and Ubuntu. I recently transitioned my Plex server from Windows to Linux and wanted to use a stable distribution with minimal upgrades, hardware encoding support, and either Flatpak or Snap for the Plex server. Ubuntu LTS was the only option that met these requirements, but I would have preferred to use Debian 12.

With that in mind, I’d like to request the following improvements:

  1. Support for Hardware Encoding on Debian 12: This would allow users like me, who prefer Debian for its stability and long-term support, to take full advantage of Plex’s capabilities on our preferred distribution.

  2. A Flatpak version with hardware encoding support: While a Plex client for desktop computers is available on Flathub, it would be great to have a Flatpak version of the Plex server that supports hardware encoding. This would make it easier for users to install and manage Plex on various Linux distributions.

Thank you for your continued efforts in making Plex an amazing product. I hope you’ll consider these suggestions to further improve the experience for Linux users. I’m sure there are some who might not consider these “features” but I do!

Best regards!
