On every player I have tried, web, Roku and ios, 80% of the move posters are are showing landscape art in a poster format. If I try to edit them, all of the selections are also landscape. I can manually add a portrait file, but I am hoping there is a setting that I can change so that Plex will automatically download portrait art for movies as it does for TV shows
Edit your library
go to the Advanced tab
look at what has been selected for Agent.
If this is “Personal Media…” then you will always get landscape.
Plex Movie is selected, To be sure I am describing the problem correctly. This is what I am seeing
Is this possibly a cropped version of a poster.jpg or cover.jpg that is stored beside the video file in the movie’s subfolder?
I have not added any files in the movie subfolder. I just went to edit for that move and discovered that there was a portrait oriented graphic there. So I fixed that one. But here is another, and there are two graphics to choose from and both are landscape. I can manually change and download and add pictures, but would like to have it done correctly automatically. I never seem to have a problem with TV art
Could you please post the first ~20 lines from the Plex XML info of an affected movie?
Seeing the folder’s contents in your media storage would be helpful as well.

tells us that the movie is currently “unmatched”. Plex will then fall back to the embedded poster or when that is not available, a screenshot from the video itself. Both can be landscape.
To assist proper matching it is recommended to put every movie into its own subfolder. Named after the pattern Movie Title (year)
. No dots or hyphens or underscores instead of spaces!
Same applies to the file names of the movies themselves, btw. Naming and organizing your Movie files | Plex Support
Is this an older library, so that the agent setting has been switched several times already?
What happens after you “Refresh Metadata” of the whole library?
Unfortunately you have omitted several things from the XML which would have been of interest. Are there any locked
fields listed? (also in the XML of other affected library items)
Very good!
should I still put each movie in its own folder?
At least for new additions I very much recommend it.
If the rest is working now, no need to touch these.
But if you ever want to add a second version to an existing film or add external subtitles or local assets, go the subfolder route. Local Media Assets - Movies | Plex Support
