I want to know why this server is continuesly buffering with 4k non hdr movie(using GT1030 & dual socket e5-2450l v1), while only 12% cpu usage and 12% gpu usage? If I go 4k hdr + tonemapping things buffer about the same, but more cpu usage.
Well it really depends on exactly what formats you’re trying to convert from and to. NVENC on Kepler GPUS (like the GT710) has limited support for encoding H.264 and no support for H.265 (HEVC). Your GT1030 doesn’t have any NVENC encoders at all.
The GT1030 does support decoding (NVDEC), but it only supports H.265 HEVC with 4:2:0 Chroma, whatever that means. lol.
I’ve been in the same boat with trying to transcode 4K content on an AMD FX-6300. I thought adding my old GTX 660 for transcoding would help, but it didn’t. As far as I can tell, none of the older Nvidia GPUS have really good support for encoding and decoding 4k until you get to the Turing-based chips like the GTX1650 and newer.
I was simply trying to decode h265 4k hdr 4.2.0 (using GT 1030) to 1080p h264 8mbps(using either the cpu or gt710 which succesfully transcoded 1 4k h264 stream of a movie on its own Both dec and enc.)
To clarify, I had same issue in past with 8th gen i5 quick sync, and with the GTX 1050.
