Plex Agent doesn't show my local Movie "extras" anymore

This has been a problem for a while now, but I’m at my wits end about how to fix it.

I have “extras” in the majority of my Movie folders on my Plex Server. I also have the lifetime Plex Pass. I’m using the current “Plex Movie Scanner and Agent”. My “extras” are in subfolders in each movie. For example.
d:/movies/Halloween (1978) {tmdb-948}/Halloween (1978).mkv

has

d:/movies/Halloween (1978) {tmdb-948}/Featurettes/stupid_name.mkv

I have ripped a ton of uhd disks and my wife likes to watch the “bonus material” that usually comes with each set. I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. Especially since Plex keeps asking me to convert to the current “scanner/agent” and not use the “legacy” anymore.

Earlier today, I moved everything back to the Legacy scanner just to make sure that I’m not crazy and all of the “extras” came back. I could see them listed under each movie (like it should do). Then I re-switched to the new Plex Movie Scanner/Agent again and the “extras” were there. I was happy.
But then as soon as any change/scan happened, all of my local extras disappeared again. The only “extras” that I can see under any of the movies are the ones that Plex has found (using the “find extras” option with my Plex Pass). I have triple-checked that I do have “use local assets” checked and that I’ve done a “refresh metadata”.

Any thoughts/ideas? I’m stumped.

Thanks,

Eric

@Eboman A few suggestions,

  • Your folders are well named
  • Your Movies library should set the Agent = Plex Movie
  • Your Movies library should set the Scanner = Plex Movie
  • Like you said you did, enable Use local assets
  • H265, HEVC, and VP09 encodes work in an MKV with Opus audio.
  • AV1 does not. The extra doesn’t even appear.
  • After adding one, on your Movies Library do a Refresh All Metadata
  • Test yours with the hosted web app

Certain players can’t handle certain types of extras (e.g. series, season, episode extras).
The web app is one player that handles all types.

I just set up a test with your layout and was able to see my local extras in a Featurettes subfolder. I think you’re close to showing it works, though possibly not in your preferred player or encoding.

fwiw I tested both the web app and Plex for Mac against PMS-1.42.2.
good luck!

I THINK I’ve got a lead on where my problem lies.

It has to do with how my movies are stored in Plex.

At my house, I have FireTVs and Apple tvs. The Apple products play Dolby Vision movies just fine. The FireTV 4k = no so much. So I have to make two “Editions” for each movie =

{edition-Dolby Vision}
and
{edition-HVEC}

for the folders with only ONE “edition”….the “Featurettes” all show correctly (I.e. anything in the designated subfolder shows as “extras”. That’s good news.

Now I just need to figure out how to do the movies where I have 2 “Editions” of the same movie in the movie folder.

I THINK I need to look into making two separate “versions” – not “editions”. I found a Plex Article that mentions exactly what I’m doing. I just need to try and implement it at some point this week when the family isn’t watching Halloween Movies on PLEX. haha.

BIG BIG THANK YOU for the reply/help. I’ll keep everyone posted once I figure this out. But the “good” news is that it looks like it’s MY making different “Editions” instead of different “versions”. Again…read the article. There IS a difference

Thanks again everyone!!

Eric

From Plex Support website:

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between “Editions” and “Versions”?

Versions all represent the same release of an item. So, you can have multiple versions (1080p vs 480p, HEVC vs H.264, MP4 vs MKV) of The Empire Strikes Back, but they’re all for the same theatrical release of the movie.

Editions represent different releases of an item. So, the “theatrical release” vs the “Special Edition” of The Empire Strikes Back. Or “Theatrical” vs “Director’s Cut” vs “Final Cut” of Blade Runner. Editions would also be appropriate for a 2D vs 3D version of a movie.

  • Place each edition in its own folder.
  • Use the “folder” method for extras (which you are doing).

If you want the extras to appear in both editions, place them in both movie folders. Depending on the server OS, you might be able to use links instead of duplicate files.

Plex DocumentationYour Media

Local Files for Movie Trailers and Extras

Note : If you’re making use of multiple editions for movies, you need to make sure that each edition is stored in its own named movie directory. The local trailers and extras can then be placed inside that specific edition folder, like normal. See information on naming movie files/folders.

Multiple Editions - Movies

Can I use local trailers or extras with Editions?

Yes, trailers and extras are supported, but you need to organize editions using the “folder” method. See our articles about naming as well as using local trailers and extras for more information.

I first want to say THANK YOU to everyone who responded/helped me with this.

I honestly thought my post would just be overlooked and I would have to go back to “clicking things until something changed/worked” (my usual way of troubleshooting).

I purchased the Lifetime Plex Pass YEARS ago – back when Plex wasn’t nearly as popular/big as it is now. That’s how long I’ve been using it. Originally, I was using a WDTV, but they discontinued those about 10 years ago. I then started to mess with Plex and/or PlayOn.

To be honest, I’m glad Plex “won” the race. I don’t know if Play-On even exists anymore (I guess I could do a simple search and find out….).

I will give these suggestions a try and report back. But I THINK the logic is sound and it should work. Luckily, I’ve got about 50tb of storage so some “duplicate” files won’t hurt me. But I might also look into “links” (I forgot the proper term…but it’s where I can keep 1 copy of a file, but have it in multiple directories).

Thanks again everyone!!

The suggestions to put each movie in it’s own folder worked perfectly. I can now see the “extras” for each movie.

I still have some “cleaning up” to do with extra movie icons and a couple of “collections” that I accidentally created.

But that’s easy to fix.

Thanks again everyone for the help with this,

Eric

While the “duplicates” filter appears to be primarily about finding actual duplicates (and thus about saving media storage space), it is actually an excellent tool to find “mismatched” files which were assigned to the wrong title.

On Windows this is called a “hard link” and does only work if both copies are stored on the same NTFS volume.
You might want to look at https://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/linkshellextension.html if you plan on using this regularly. It still works on Windows 11.
