Plex and Alexa: will multiroom play be supported?

I just started using Plex and am very happy with it so far, but have one major problem. Not having Multi-Group is going to be a deal killer for me as that is all I listen to. Unfortunately I realize Amazon is the roadblock to this happening. Amazon was a little slow even getting Multi-Room to work with its own apps. I was experiencing bugs with it for several months and emails to Amazon after it came out. Multi-Room still does not work with Amazon Music Alarms or its Flash Briefing feature so support for outside developers such as Plex may be a ways off. I will write to Amazon and request this feature be opened to such developers as Plex. If you would like to do the same the link to place comments is:

Comments for suggestions on Amazon Forums also get some attention. The link for that is: https://www.amazonforum.com/forums/devices/echo-alexa All the Best, Rich

I wonder if you can ask for the SDK from here -> https://developer.amazon.com/blogs/alexa/post/7c9343ce-425b-4baa-ae63-49c36afb5341/giving-device-makers-more-ways-to-bring-voice-forward-music-experiences-to-their-products

I’d love to have multiroom playback on my Alexa devices! Plex is the saving grace for the Echo speakers, since they don’t work with YouTube!

I would love this too. I spent a while trying to get I to work before finding this thread. It could be pretty neat for podcasts and audiobooks too while cleaning the house.

Did azon ever release multiroom to third parties? I just discovered this skill and am estatic that it exists. The one thing it’s missing is the ability to play on all my echos.

I’m here for the same thing.

Now that Plex has started to get its Podcast capability usable, and now that I have Echo devices scattered around my house, I’d love to be able to play Music or Podcasts or Audiobooks (in my music library) from ALL of my Amazon Echo devices around the house using multiroom.

Unfortunately there’s still no public API to support this scenario. If this changes and we add support we’ll make an announcement.

Just a further +1 for this if Amazon ever provide Plex with sufficient permissions. I’ve made a request to Amazon for it, and hopeful Plex can lobby them too - I’d buy at least a couple more Echoes if this was available and expect others would too so surely it’s in their interests. Thanks.

Two questions:

  1. Is it possible to get Plex ā€œupgradedā€ to be a First Party skill instead of waiting for the API to be made available to Third Party skills?

  2. What about being able to leverage anything that might currently be available in the API’s to trigger multiple Echo devices to request the same stream at the same time? I’m guessing this would not be terribly efficient as it could create multiple transcode and stream sessions as well as be out of sync and also leave each Echo device on its own for control moving forward.

@vanstinator
I’m having trouble finding my way back to the configuration of multi-room audio with Plex. My friends and I all have PMS on Linux RAIDs and Pi2B or Pi3B+ nodes with Hifiberry or JustBoom DAC’s or Amps. Could you point me to the doc’s on configuring multiroom so that Android, iOS or whatever clients can send PMS music to groups of the clients?

Thanks for the help. Judging by my browsing research, many others are trying to get this done too.

I am trying to solve the same problem. If anyone had figured it out, I would love to know.

Still no way for us to do this with the current skill. Sorry.

Is this (multi-room) restriction also applied to stereo pairs? I have two Echo Dot third generation. As stereo and Plex only plays from one of the speakers I just want to make sure I wasn’t doing something wrong.

Thanks.

Mark

Is that still the case? Amazon’s developer docs say the API is open to all third party developers.

That’s actually an entirely different framework for cloud music providers. Unfortunately it won’t work for us at this time.

Thanks for responding. I was afraid something like that might be the case since you’re not serving the library.

Plex connects to Alexa as a skill so it has the multi-room limitation. Is there any hope that Plex could connect to Amazon as a music service the same way Tidal does? Then it would work. I’m guessing Amazon may not want to allow this…

Hello,

Any update if it is still not supported?

Kind regards

bump. I’m wanting this too!

bump. This really needs to be added/fixed. I was able to do this using Google Chromecast audio but now that is dead, this is the next inexpensive solution. Long time Plex supporter.

there is a hack for this as described in https://github.com/custom-components/alexa_media_player/wiki, maybe the Plex skill could do the same
