I’m having an issue with how to categorize some of my documentaries.
I have single episode docu’s and some docu’s like mythbusters or Michael Palin travels that goes multiple seasons (episodes). I like to watch those docu’s in order like TV shows but when I manage my plex those docu’s show up as single episode shows and don’t play the next episode automaticly or even show matadata so I have to do it all manually.
Is there some way to manage all my docu’s in 1 folder and still be able to manage them like TV shows or single episode docu’s (including metadata)?
You should organize/name them according to the official naming schema. But you can place those crossover episodes in a single episode collection or playlist to watch them e.g. based on their air dates
In my case I went with a Movies library for single-episode documentaries, and a TV Shows library for multi-episode documentaries. Only way I could get Plex to pull metadata correctly for them…
What are some of your single-episode documentaries? You might be surprised at what “fake” series are available in metadata that are organized in order that you can take advantage of.
I think it would be easiest to try to find these, and do everything in a TV library.
The single ones are like those you can find on youtube. for example a general ww2 documentary. or a space documentary like hubble telescope or Space X.
These do not fit in a series like those from the youtube channel StarTalk etc…
That might not work, given they tend to be categorized differently in the metadata repositories used by Plex… and Plex doesn’t allow/support mixed-content libraries — at least if you want to get any metadata for those non-tv-show shows.
Putting all documentaries in a single folder, and Plex library, was my goal as well when I started.
My experience is that single episode documentaries are treated as movies by metadata sources such as The Movie Database and TheTVDB. Consequently you’ll have issues with Plex trying to pull metadata if you dump single episode documentaries in a TV Shows library. You could always manually tag them I suppose.
