Hi,
Is Plex capable of taking advantage of the HDCD format? I have a bunch of HDCDs I ripped, just wondering if I should convert them first or if Plex can do that on the fly.

I don’t have any personal experience with the formats/codecs used for this type of medium. You could try adding a raw track and see if Plex will recognize it as an audio file. Or you simply rip it to a lossless format (e.g. FLAC; given HDCD format is 30+ years old, FLAC might give you some increased efficiency / reduce the required filespace).
They’re all FLACs. My question is does Plex know those FLACs are from HDCDs and can it convert them on the fly to take advantage of the format (by increasing bit depth), or should I convert them to 24-bit FLACs in my library.
It cannot.
Yes.
Thanks! Why is that? Aren’t there open source decoders? I think FFMPEG can do it.
The existence of open source decoders doesn’t negate the validity of patents.
If you have a commercial product like Plex, and you use ffmpeg in a way that involves existing software patents, you have to pay license fees. Otherwise you are likely to get sued.
