I may just not be smart enough to do this, I am extremely frustrated.
I am trying get HDhomeRun to showup in Plex, I 've tried IOS and Roku. I purchased a Plex Pass, but cannot add HDHomeRun. There is no option in Live TV & DVR, Your Media, Live TV, etc. and there is no DVR option in the list. This appears to be the procedure, but the options are just not on my player. : https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877347-live-tv-dvr/
Where is your HDHomeRun installed and recording to? I use a NAS and both HDHomeRun and Plex are installed on it. Plex on Roku is then linked to Plex on the NAS. If you do not have a NAS, the same can be accomplished with a PC or raspberry pi.
The HDHomeRun is working and accessible from my TVs, PC and iphone.
Perhaps this is the problem, I don’t understand what the Plex Media Server is used for?? I thought Plex was able to access the HdHomerun for both local channels and/or media?
Plex Media Server is the centralized component that allows you to “serve” your own video and audio media and pictures. The media can be movies you have downloaded or ripped from DVDs, personal video recordings from your smartphone or video camera, pictures from your digital camera or smartphone, song files such as mp3s, and recorded or live TV called “Live TV & DVR” in the Plexverse if you have a tuner and a Plex Pass. You have to install Plex Media Server somewhere to use do live TV with Plex or to record live TV, and then the various Plex clients (Android, Roku, ATV, web browser, etc) can be used to view content.
Your Plex Media Server can be installed on many different supported platforms: Windows, Linux, Nvidia Shield devices, NAS devices, etc. Then you can set up a Plex DVR on your Plex Media Server from the web interface, and either watch live TV through Plex or record TV to disk/storage attached to the device where you installed your Plex server.
Where it gets interesting is that you have a HDHDR Scribe Duo. I have an HDHR Extend, but I’m reading that the Scribe Duo has a hard drive and DVR built in and is fully capable of recording and viewing live TV without Plex. I believe you would use a HDHR client to do this.
If you want to also use Plex with your HDHR Scribe Duo then I think you could, but you would essentially have two devices with DVR functionality using your HDHR Scribe Duo’s tuners. Likely you would want to pick one as your DVR, and here’s why: both the Plex DVR and the HDHR DVR will expect to have full control over the two tuners you have available. If you run both, then they will eventually conflict. If your HDHR DVR has both tuners in use, and the Plex DVR then tries to record then it will get an error and your recording will fail. The opposite is likely true - Plex DVR could have both tuners in use and then the HDHR DVR wouldn’t be able to allocate a tuner. Perhaps someone else that has a Scribe will chime in, but I think you will need to pick where you want to run your DVR function: either the HDHR Scribe DVR or the Plex DVR (in which case you would need to install Plex Media Server somewhere.)
It also gets a bit confusing because Plex has added the ability to stream content from Plex clients from “the cloud” outside of a personal Plex Media Server. This is where podcasts, “Movies & TV”, and “Live TV” (not to be confused with “Live TV & DVR”) come in.
I hope this helps as opposed to making things more confusing.
Thanks. This is very helpful. I bought the HDHomeRun based on Plexs listed support for it as a tuner. It was listed with numerous PC Cards, so it certainly appeared to be a standalone solution and had planned to use Plex and Plexs cloud DVR with the local drive as a backup when the internet is down. The need to have an additional box running really doesn’t fit the bill and isn’t really presented this way on Plexs website. The HDHomeRun even comes with a month free of Plexs service with no mention of needing a separate network server.
