PLEX and large music libraries

Can anybody tell me if PLEX still has a hard time with very large music libraries? I have a few terabytes of music, mostly classical, so some files themselves are large due to long “songs.” I know this used to be a problem for PLEX and wondering if it still is.

Thank you!
James

Hi there, thanks for the reply! I would say most of the 2TB library is made up of many smaller files, and every file has pretty detailed info (tags), but a lot of those files might not match what a service has them tagged with. Doesn’t sound like it will be that bad.

Are you saying there is a basic and premium “mode” within PLEX itself?

Thanks,

The list of tags you provided is what Plex currently supports, and for that reason is the minimal effort someone should put into it. However, in order to be truly useful for all music, but especially for classical music, Plex needs to support several more tags. I wrote a feature request asking Plex to do just that, and Plex’s co-founder recently hinted at upcoming (though that could mean years) improvements in this area. In the feature request you’ll find a list of tags that I feel would allow Plex to manage a well-organized classical library.

My recommendation to the OP, and to anyone with a collection of classical music, is to populate your embedded tags as thoroughly as possible in anticipation of those improvements, and to please add your vote to that feature request, if you haven’t already.

Thanks Trumpy81! That’s great. That is pretty much the way my library looks now. The only thing different is how I handle albums with multiple artists, so I’m already 95% there.

Thanks to you too, backfield! I will definitely cast in my vote! Excellent work!!

Does PLEX support lossless audio (for music library) yet?

You can use flac or alac for lossless. Though both have some issues when streamed remotely to Android, but mostly work as well as mp3 or aac.

Thanks OttoKerner! This is a great help!!

Does anybody know if there is a PLEX demo online somewhere?

You can demo it yourself. Just download the server and install it.
All the basic functionality is freely available.

Thanks OttoKerner, I’ll do that!

Not sure if this is the appropriate place, but I actually did experience some serious performance issues after adding a rather large music collection (+230k files in 30 genre folders, containing +6k artist folders, …) from my NAS. The issues seem to be independet of the NAS hardware (previously WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra, now Synology DS 718+).

The issue:
Even after several restarts of Plex as well as the media server(s), Plex would not let me access my other libraries (video content) anymore. Dashboard content would just not be displayed, library would be inaccessible, library content would not load/be displayed. Sometimes it would work after multiple switches from dashboard to library and back. The issue occurs on all connected devices / apps (PC. PS4, Samsung TV), so I am guessing it has to be something related to the Plex server / database.

After removing the respective music library, everything immediately worked normally again, so for the time being I give up on adding my music to Plex.

After adding a lot of items, perform a database optimization.

With such a high number of songs, I recommend to put the Plex data folder onto an SSD.
