Plex Android mobile cellular buffers - but not over WireGuard

Not wanting to add to the plethora of “Plex buffers” topics, but this one has me stumped.

Server works great. Users stream locally and remotely, no problem at all.

I have Plex on a Pixel 7, so Android. I have a 3mbps HEVC encoded file. When connected locally by wifi, it streams fine.

When I am connected using cellular / mobile 5G, the stream buffers every 3-5 seconds.

But if I connect to the network Plex Server sits on using WireGuard, over the very same 5G connection, it streams beautifully,

There is a bucketload of bandwidth on the 5G connection - I can download a file from the same host Plex Server is on at 38mbps, which is the servers maximum throughput.

Encryption is on, I do see a little green lock on the dashboard. A non-standard port is being used. Enable relay is off. Internet upload speed is set to 36mbps, and Limit Stream Bandwidth is set to Original (No Limit).

What on earth is going on here?

Does your mobile provide throttle streaming apps? Most do if you don’t have the top tier plan and even then I am guessing some till do. When you use Wireguard I am guessing you provided doesn’t know what traffic is happening and the throttling goes away.

Just a guess though.
