Plex app for Panasonic Smart Viera

...Yes, I'm replying to the post *below* mine ... I will HAPPILY pay $3 for this!

Greetings everyone,

First, my apologies for the stagnation of this project. My job gets busiest right around the holidays, so it's only in the last couple of days that I have found time to work on this.

The good news is that version 1.0 is essentially complete, and I have submitted it to Panasonic for inclusion in the Viera Market.  I have no idea when (or if) it will be approved, but I will make every effort to comply with any changes they require.

Development has been difficult, mostly due to the poor performance of HTML5 apps on the TV.  What worked beautifully in Chrome/Safari/Firefox worked terribly on the TV, so a lot of fades & transitions had to be removed.  The interface is still sluggish, but video plays perfectly smooth.

Version 1 includes support for browsing libraries (including TV seasons), displaying metadata/poster/background, continue partially watched video, skip ahead & back 30 seconds, and search functionality.

I was going back & forth on whether to make this a paid app or not.  In the end, given all of the time I've put into it and will put into it, I decided to charge a modest $3. This will help support future development efforts, including bug fixes, myPlex, subtitles, DirectPlay & DirectStream, and sort & filter options.

Once I receive confirmation from Panasonic that it is in the Viera Market, I will let everyone know.  Thank you.

Sweet,

I have spend several days to find some solution to view my media on my panasonic. Even so I have started to experement with other media servers. But with no luck. So I am more then happy to see that you have a version 1 avaible soon.

As soon it is avaible in the viera store, you will have 3$ from me. B)

Thank you

Q: which TV will be supported by this App ?

2014 is off to a fantastic start after hearing this news! $3 is a small price to pay to have PLEX functionality natively on the TV!

Just gotta hope that Panasonic don't drag their heels in approving the app for the Viera Market.

VieraApp - you have our gratitude my friend. Your efforts will be rewarded.

Q: which TV will be supported by this App ?

As far as I know, any Panasonic model supporting HTML5 apps will be able to use it, which should include most (if not all) of the 2012 & 2013 plasma & LCD TVs.  Here is the full list from Panasonic:

http://developer.vieraconnect.com/intro/development-guide/device-guidelines/html5

2011 models and all Blu-ray players are not supported, but there is a chance Panasonic may add support to 2013 Blu-Ray players (but don't hold your breath).

AWESOME NEWS! Please send me your PayPal! I will sent you some extra cash!

You have no idea how happy i am !

Excellent hope it appears on the uk Viera App Store as we’ll when they approve, out of interest can you write and test your own apps on the tv with a free sdk or is it something you have to pay for ?

Good news! You’ve got the 3 from me as well!

I'm also ready to drop $3 on this!  Do you know if apps are region locked, as i'm in Australia and would love to install this.

+1 great news hope it's in UK app my money is ready

The apps are region locked, but I would like to make it available to as many countries as I can.  Unfortunately, Panasonic only allows paid apps for North America and Europe, so this app will initially only be available there (sorry Australia).

I am considering ways to accommodate this via a free app... perhaps making version 1 free (to all countries) when version 2 comes out.  Or maybe make it free to those countries where paid apps aren't allowed.  I'm open to suggestions, but I'm holding off on any more work until version 1 gets approved and I get feedback from this forum.  You might all think it's crap.

I did hear back from Panasonic QA today with some questions and some minor changes.  Can't tell you when/if it will be released, but progress is being made.

@VieraApp many thanks for the update. It sounds like Panasonic have been pretty proactive so far.

Hopefully they’ll be able to fast track this through!

Every day is a step closer!

Funny enough I contacted Panasonic Customer Support to enquire why they had put no effort into porting Plex to their devices - here’s the reply:

"Unfortunately in this instance there has not been a high demand for this particular application on our devices. However, please rest assured that we are continuously working on improving our products and features, and as soon as new content is released, it will become available in the Viera Connect."

Strange that both Samsung and LG seem to have a high enough demand on their devices!

Panasonic seem to be living their lives under a stone these days and not listen to what their customers expect from a TV these days.

That sounds very much like a standard answer that they say about all things that is not in their database. Basically the agents on the phone learn that "if customer asks about unknown app, answer this..." :)

that's one of the best presents received for Xmas!

you got my 3 dollars!

Thank you for the efforts so far
