Hi everyone. I posted this awhile back in reddit and was never able to find a solution. I have converted to a plex pass lifetime subscription and figured maybe it was time to get things working. I apologize as part of this is an older post with some new info that I found today checking logs.
So my high bitrate streams locally work flawlessly on my LAN which is wired gigabit.
I direct play everything possible to another desktop, smart tv apps etc.
The desktop that I use as the server is a Lenovo M920q with an i5 8500T. Intel UHD 630 for the integrated graphics.
I also use this machine for movie playback through the windows plex app as I have it hooked to my living rooms projector. 1080p content runs fine through the plex app but if I attempt 4k content it frequently drops frames and looks to be running around 10-15 fps, very choppy. It looks like Plex is not able to utilize the hardware decode of the UHD 630. If I check task manager during playback the video decode section stays at 0%. CPU is maxed and choppy playback.
I also just checked the log for the first time and it seems to be failing when attempting hardware decode and reverts to software decode:

If I use a different player, such as VLC, it runs perfectly smooth with very low CPU usage.
Plex doesnt seem to be utilizing the UHD 630 correctly for some reason. I have reinstalled GPU drivers / plex, set power options to high performance but still the same issue.
The dashboard does show the video/audio is being direct played and no transcoding is happening but maybe I am missing something.
Anyone have any suggestions or can possibly point me in the right direction?
If any additional information would help, let me know.
Any help is appreciated!
I may have found a temporary solution. I installed the older Plex Media Player for home theater pc’s. Enabled hardware decode and it works fine! Shows GPU decode and the video is stutter free.
I know this program is not updated anymore but if it works for now then I am happy. Would rather avoid losing features in the future but I wouldn’t be able to handle a movie constantly chugging so this works. I thought maybe the HDR tonemapping wouldn’t work but it looks good.
If anyone has a suggestion to get hardware decode working properly in the Plex app I would be happy to try it.
