Plex App on NEW Apple TV App Store

Countdown! Exited with the idea.

This for sure leaves 4k on the table for (very possibly) the next refresh.
Very similar when Apple switched form to the AppleTV 2 that was 720p with an A4 chip for a year and a half and then went 1080p and switched to the A5.

I’m sure they are testing the waters with a safe offering to check the reception. tvOS 2 and AppleTV5 should actually give us quite a bit more.
Hopefully with HDMI pass through and a 4k offering plus taking a jab at logitech and it’s monopoly in the remote business. Apple is moving deeper into retina and higher res machines to not offer 4k soon. I’m betting that even though the A8 can do 4k, they want a chip even more powerful that can handle it with ease rather than just powerful enough.

Surely as with the excuses surrounding firetv, if the apple does not support it then it won’t work. or there will be no sound, or surround sound will be stereo, or it will say unable to play media, etc etc

To my eyes the apple is going to be worse that firetv in that respect.

Whats with the no optical as well ffs.

Whilst the potential seems to be there with the new Apple TV you’d think it’s likely that we won’t get what we want with this revision or in good time. I’m sure video and audio will not be as fully supported as on other platforms which would make it a less attractive substitute for the time being than a tried and tested Roku, for instance.

I’m currently running Plex HTPC on my Mac mini server and am desperate to get a small media player. I was about to get a Roku 2/3 but this announcement will keep me holding on until Xmas time.

Does FireTV or Roku support 24p and truehd audio?

Nope. None of these turnkey devices tick all the boxes for A/V enthusiasts.

I want to be excited about this, but the Apple TV is probably going to be as much of a fail in terms of Direct Play as any iOS device currently is. I’m not sure it’s going to be much of an upgrade over the Samsung Plex client.

I like the idea of the Apple TV, but this version 4 looks like the only way to get audio out of it is via hdmi and I don’t have a suitable AV amp. So, the search continues for my ultimate Plex device.

My issue is that I’ve tried many other approaches to getting Plex content onto my home
theater, and have had piss poor luck getting any of them to work consistently. I currently have
an expensive Intel NUC running OpenELEC+Plex, and it consistently has issues with stuttering
video.

I run OpenELEC+Plex. I would recommend you stick with version OpenELEC-Plex-Intel-3.2.4-220-Plex-Home-Theater-1.3.6-0f259cb.x86_64. Every newer version after this one has caused me problems, either with random resets or stutters. But this version plays butter smooth, not one single issue.

I’m really looking forward to this. I buy a fair bit of movies on AppleTV and I hate having to switch between Roku and AppleTV to watch content.

Well, much like others here have said, I’m disappointed. I have a whole bunch of boxes, none of them do everything that I need them to do.

Intel NUC5 with OpenELEC-Plex - this is my primary Plex player, but it doesn’t do anything else useful (no Netflix, Rdio, Airplay is buggy)
AppleTV 3 - use it daily for Airplay but nothing else
Roku 2 - wife uses it sometimes for Rdio and Pandora, I hate the interface
Fire TV - use it for Netflix, HBOGo, Showtime, Rdio, but it’s terrible for Plex (no HD audio) and Airplay
BoxeeBox - no longer in use
AppleTV 1 (with 1080p mod chip) - was running XBMC, no longer in use

It’s shocking that with today’s powerful hardware, none of these solutions are fully meeting our needs. I was hopeful the Fire TV would be the one, but Plex is just HORRIBLE on it.

In one box, I want:

  • Plex
  • mkv native support
  • DTS-MA and TrueHD passthrough
  • 24p (I would even live without it!)
  • Netflix, Rdio, HBOGo, ShowtimeAnytime, Pandora
  • Airplay (with solid quality)
  • 4k would be nice

I guess we can always hope that the new AppleTV will actually do audio passthrough, even though it’s not in the specifications.

@ixion you nailed it… couldn’t have said it any better. I have the same sentiments.

Right now I’m just hoping for Plex support. I refuse to buy it and wait endlessly for the app to maybe be announced. I buy when the app drops. Even if I had to pay for it like I had to do with the iPhone, I’d buy it on the Apple TV. Until then…fear not my Roku 3.

During the Keynote Eddie Cue said that Siri can search for a content in any apps with media library. Hoping that they have the APIs for that for every developers. (i.e. Not just for Netflix)

I just listened to that part of the keynote again and he said “Siri will search iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Showtime - and we’ll be adding even more over time.” That seems a bit different than searching any apps with media. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly hope it can work with Plex - but I wouldn’t bet on it for now.

I would assume so. It would also be awesome if it could be searched using the siri integration

After using plex on androidtv for a while now thats pretty much a deal breaker for me. Really annoying they seem to be limiting universal search like this.

Pretty sure the Apple TV plays 4K. No reason why it wouldn’t. They just didn’t talk about it but not everyone has a 4K TV due to pricing.

Nope. Its clear on the spec sheet. Stuck with hdmi1.4 too.

Aren’t there issues surrounding 4k video ( hdcp, etc…)? Is there a well established standard?
In any case it’s hardly a priority at this time. No content a too large to stream. I can see it being useful for AirPlay of video taken on an iPhone but perhaps there are bandwidth issues.

Can’t wait to find out more details, but I also doubt that integration of the more useful features like SIri search will be available for everyone with this generation. For now, I guess you have to be HBO or something to be able to use those APIs, but I’m sure in a few years a AppleTV Plex app can be just as awesome as we all want it to be. And maybe by then they will also finally have hardware that can do proper 24p. Sigh.

I suspect what will happen is you ask siri for a movie of some kind and you are offered to purchase it from itunes. I bet thats how it will work even if its on neflix on your appleTV, lets be realistic here is going to be crap.
