Plex App on NEW Apple TV App Store

It seems so: http://www.itworld.com/article/2982961/hardware/exclusive-plex-is-coming-to-apple-tv.html

While I’m sure they will, am I really going to buy new ATVs to replace all the rokus I already have? Unlikely. I think the announcement is way overdue, and many users like myself are already entrenched in other echosystems (roku, Amazon TV, smart tvs, etc)

I don’t see the new Apple TV as being the device for hardcore AV enthusiasts looking for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA or 24fps or 4K video and those other “checkboxes” that you can get with some other streaming devices. What I want is a single box that Plex, AppleMusic, Pandora, Netflix, AirPlay, etc., without having to switch boxes all the time. I only have a Roku 3 because Apple TV doesn’t have PLEX. I’m really excited to know that this is finally coming! (Just please allow me to view my home videos and photos by folder!) I want my family to just be able to turn on the system and have everything we use front and center! The DAY Plex for Apple TV drops, I’m buying 2 of them.

They missed wildly for me. I have an expensive HIFI system as I enjoy music. All the ATV has is hdmi out, FAIL. Its not an answer to anything if you like good quality sound.

No, but I’m not even sure what STB does pass a BluRay rip with TrueHD/DTSMA from Plex untouched. Sure you could run Kodi or PHT on a HTPC but thats a bit different.

Maybe the Nvidia Shield TV will do it at some point if the talked about codec pack ever happens.

I’m not sure HDMI is the issue there rather than the innards not supporting hires audio formats. Well aside from it being an issue for older equipment.

Well, much like others here have said, I’m disappointed. I have a whole bunch of boxes, none of them do everything that I need them to do.

Intel NUC5 with OpenELEC-Plex - this is my primary Plex player, but it doesn’t do anything else useful (no Netflix, Rdio, Airplay is buggy)
AppleTV 3 - use it daily for Airplay but nothing else
Roku 2 - wife uses it sometimes for Rdio and Pandora, I hate the interface
Fire TV - use it for Netflix, HBOGo, Showtime, Rdio, but it’s terrible for Plex (no HD audio) and Airplay
BoxeeBox - no longer in use
AppleTV 1 (with 1080p mod chip) - was running XBMC, no longer in use

It’s shocking that with today’s powerful hardware, none of these solutions are fully meeting our needs. I was hopeful the Fire TV would be the one, but Plex is just HORRIBLE on it.

In one box, I want:

  • Plex
  • mkv native support
  • DTS-MA and TrueHD passthrough
  • 24p (I would even live without it!)
  • Netflix, Rdio, HBOGo, ShowtimeAnytime, Pandora
  • Airplay (with solid quality)
  • 4k would be nice

I guess we can always hope that the new AppleTV will actually do audio passthrough, even though it’s not in the specifications.

with windows 8.1 on the intel nuc, you could install pht and all the streaming apps ans make them easily accessible by customizing the start menu and having it boot up in pht.

it would tick all your boxes withhout having to buy new hardware.

Nothing really new here. Plex has been clear since the beginning that they will be going to tvOS.
But I suppose they will keep most of the iOS team focused on fixing the bugs of the 4.0 iOS app first.

True. I get that. But then I’d have to deal with Windows and a whole PC environment. Sure, it can be customized (change startup shell, etc), but it’s still not very wife friendly IMO.

Boom. There it is.

Popular media streaming client Plex is coming to the new Apple TV - 9to5Mac

Looks like I wasn’t viewing the end of the thread when I posted this. Glad you all are ahead of me!

More info on the universal search.

TLDR:
Search isn’t part of the API, It will require approval from Apple to get it in the app.

I wonder if it’ll launch the same time as the iPad Pro? If so, that SHOULD be enough time for the devs to create at least a beta app for us Plex Pass members to use and test out. And if that happens, I’m getting the new aTV.

Bummer :frowning: This probably means apps like Plex will just be “normal” apps running on the ATV without any systemwide integration whatsoever. It really feels like Apple is crippling itself with restrictions like this, especially outside the US where only Netflix is available and almost every country has different specific VoD-Services.

so, now that the dev kit lottery is over, did plex got a hardware devout ?

Yeah.

They really should of followed the Google approach and provided an API for devs.

But I guess we won’t know how bad it will be in terms of approving apps for search access until after it ships. Then again, its clear they aren’t letting youtube in. Which is a bummer. I certainly love that feature on AndroidTV.

The only thing we can do is really just wait until we know exactly how Apple is handling this. “One-by-one” could also mean they don’t want everyone tapping into this by themselves, but isn’t only for the “big players” like Netflix, Hulu etc. and plex could get the chance to be integrated as it is probably the biggest player regarding streaming personal media.

Looking at iOS9 as far is i know everyone can implement the “universal spotlight search” to show up in the results of spotlight. Maybe it’s the same on ATV an just stuff like siri integration is a bit more “guarded” by apple. At this time we can only speculate, but i’m sure we hear more about this before release as devs get their hands on the dev kits.

Also i think it’s different depending on the content. In my opinion it would make no sense to show youtube results on a movie search or on the “content-page” where it says available on"iTunes, Netflix etc." as it just would extremely clutter your results, but i’m almost certain that you can search youtube or other apps with commands like “search for funny cats on youtube” or “search for Daft Punk in spotify”. At least this distinction would make sense.

Sadly we just have to hope and wait that apple is doing the “right thing” and won’t lock itself up in a “walled garden”:frowning:

It is a done deal, see Macrumors. Plex is coming the new Apple TV

Did Plex with the lottery?
