This could indeed be good for plex, but not if users have to re-incode all their media, which I rather suspect they will. (in which case the new ATV look and feel will do and you may as well use iTunes.}
If plex comes with everything, watch later, channels etc it will be great. Weâll see.

Erm thatâs what the plex server is for? And the ATV will play everything what the iOS Devices can play without transcoding. If something isnât supported natively on the ATV the plex server will just transcode it on the fly as it does now for every other device. Thatâs the beauty of the plex server/client system, right?
They donât need an AppleTV to start developing, the simulator on Xcode 7.1 is pretty good. But they will need one to start real life testing

Whas the deal with fire tv then? I though the excuse for lack of surround sound is that plex is restricted to what the device natively supports.
So, The SDK kits when out to some developers. I hope plex developers got their hands on one. Apple must realize that people are buying other devices due to plex itself.

Looking at iOS9 as far is i know everyone can implement the âuniversal spotlight searchâ to show up in the >results of spotlight. Maybe itâs the same on ATV an just stuff like siri integration is a bit more âguardedâ by >apple. At this time we can only speculate, but iâm sure we hear more about this before release as devs get >their hands on the dev kits.
Though spotlight search seems pretty wonky to me from my brief play with the couple of apps that use it (Pinterest mostly). It does something much less than passing a search request to the app. With the pinterest app at least it only searches pages the user has already looked though in the app manually rather than doing a full pinterest search.
Also i think itâs different depending on the content. In my opinion it would make no sense to show youtube >results on a movie search or on the âcontent-pageâ where it says available on"iTunes, Netflix etc." as it just >would extremely clutter your results, but iâm almost certain that you can search youtube or other apps with >commands like âsearch for funny cats on youtubeâ or âsearch for Daft Punk in spotifyâ. At least this >distinction would make sense.
Sadly we just have to hope and wait that apple is doing the âright thingâ and wonât lock itself up in a âwalled >gardenâ
Iâm not sure how Iâd like it implemented. With AndroidTV it the device just searches for what you say across every app that supports it unless you have disabled search for searching that app.
And for me I mostly use the youtube search to search for music videos or video podcasts.
I guess you could use media types in a siri query to determine which apps to search. So if I said âtwit podcastsâ siri would search youtube and apps like pocketcasts along with I guess the apple podcasts app, but if I said âqueen music videosâ it would search apple music, youtube and vevo or whatever.
I originally started this thread because, as an Apple person, Iâd like if all of my devices were integrated the way I see fit. This shouldâve always been on Apple TV. And although I like the Roku, it leaves things to be desired in regards to integration with Apple products.
Yea, the SDK has been out. They also were letting Developers get the new AppleTV for only $1
You had to register, and if you have apps already in the app store, you got first rights. We have an app in the app store, but I got rejected on getting the $1 apple TV. They only had limited supply. I would of loved to get the new AppleTV for only $1
Anyways, it should not be that hard as it will be just a port from iOS devices im sure.
I cannot wait for thisâŠThis is what I have been waiting on for so long. No more having to jailbreak the AppleTVâŠ
I managed to get a Development Kit from Apple, so if you are developing this, and need any support testing, let me know.
Would be nice to see plex come and and confirm they have the kit and are working on it
We have a couple of dev kits
Can anyone with a dev kit speak to whether this thing is capable of 24p video output? If so, I have a bunch of people who are getting this as a Christmas present.
The Apple TV 4 uses HDMI 1.4, so no 4K.
Sorry i misunderstood how what page i was on, and now am not sure who to delete this redundant post
If you need any help with beta-testing I just received a dev-kit.

HDMI 1.4 does 4K: http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/4K.aspx
Here is another candidate eager to participate in beta testing
Dev-Kit arrived todayâŠ
This is my big hope to replace FireTV with a âall in one perfect clientâ (which FireTV isnât)
Cheers
Thorsten
Since some of you received a Dev Kit could you please test:
Thanks

- 24p Playback
It has been answered in the apple dev forums. It wonât be possible as the ATV has a fixed 60hz Output and apps canât change that. (at least for now, maybe theyâll change that in the future)
@Wunderwally
Thanks!
Anyone can do a quick test for 2) ?
