Plex App on TCL tv and "soap opera affect"

I purchased the TCL 75s535 a little over a year ago. I turned off Action Smoothing and Natural Cinema Setting. It seemed to reduce the “soap opera effect” but not completely remove it. It seems more noticeable at times and on some movies.

We use the preinstalled Plex App on the TCL tv for just about everything we watch. We only watch older classic films and I don’t know if they are more obvious when affected by motion smoothing.

We watched Casablanca 4K and the soap opera effect was so bad we couldn’t watch it. Reverted to the Blu Ray version and it was better but still had some. This was our first 4K movie and can’t find a way to fix the problem.

I wondered if there was a way in Plex to override all of this motion smoothing application? I can’t find anything but thought I would ask.

Also, I saw some people on forums saying that a Roku box instead of the app on the tv fixed the problem for them. Others the firestick. Wondered if anyone might have had this experience and found a external box to be a good solution?

Not sure if an external device overrides the tv’s settings or why it would work better than the apps on the tv but considering this as an option. I can’t get my blu-ray player to totally eliminate the effect (still has it slightly with all of the settings turned off that I’ve read cause it). We hardly ever use the blu-ray player so I haven’t cared. Since this external device still has it, I don’t know if I have hope that Roku box will fix the problem.

Any thoughts, ideas or solutions would be more than welcomed!!!

Thank you,

Linda
