My Plex server is configured to use RFC 1918 addresses for 192.168.0.0/16 and 172.16.0.0/12, and all my servers and clients live in those ranges. Yet after enablling remote access, all my APP-based clients target my Outside IP address and the Custom Port I configured for remote plex. Why is that? shouldn’t they use My Internal network? It appears I need to add a NAT on my firewall to turn the traffic around.
Yes as far as I understand, Plex App clients (android, ios, smart TV OS’s, etc) all use the plex.tv connector to reach PMS by default.
There is however, an option called Manual Connections on the App versions, that allow you to manually specify the server IP and port. I haven’t tried this myself but it’s worth a shot for you.
The location of the setting is in Settings -> Advanced -> Manual Connections, of the app you’re using. Should be there for all app types too as far as I’ve seen.
Keep in mind that you need to tell Plex that both subnets are part of your local network. Otherwise Plex will consider the respective other local network as “remote” and apply “remote playback rules”.
As you have a Plex Pass you can configure Plex to recognize both subnets to be local by setting Settings > [Server Name] > Network > LAN Networks to 192.168.0.0/16,172.16.0.0/12
Thanks guys - I did the NAT to workaround, but will try the “Manual connections” option as well, as I’d rather go direct.
If your router does DNS rebinding protection, the FQDN of your server cannot be resolved in the local network. Which prevents secure connections from working. Some clients might prefer secure connections, so they pick the “external” URL.
