Plex App stops working on Roku TV

Server Version#: Version 4.157.0
Player Version#: 9.0 Build 34

Roku TV is running version 15.04 Build 5537

For the past three months, the Roku app has been randomly failing to access my Media sources or stop working when playing a video. Uninstalled the Plex app. Restarted Roku. Reinstalled Plex, and it continues to happen. I’ve also done a factory reset of the device with no change. Yet will play fine via the web app and on iPad with no issues.

I am having the same experience on my TCL Roku TV. Plex consistently crashes. I have updated all systems, restarted/reinstalled app all with no luck. Shows will start playing then glitch backwards to a prior moment in the show and then ultimately just crash. It is getting so bad I am having to explore other systems to stream my shows from and I have been a PlexPass user for 10 years so I really do not want to switch.

You can get log files from Roku and Server to share here and that can help track issues down.

I’ve not had any issues myself with my Roku crashing out or not accessing media libraries so getting specifics about your setup to go along with those logs could help devs track it down if it’s not a widespread issue. Like network config and what type of server you’re accessing and which version of Roku client or server and such… stuff like that.

I was able to find it and will and share them asap. Thanks

You find the settings within Plex app settings, not the Roku settings. I don’t think the instructions are very clear about that aspect and might be where you got misdirected.

Edit: It’ll be good if you can say too what time the crash was so when dev\folks dig through the logs they’ll know about where to look. Or wait and grab the logs right after a crash. Get the ones from the Roku and the Server - that’ll be the most complete option.

Edit2: Forgot to say … sometimes apps on Roku flake out and what helps the most is unplugging the device for like 30 seconds to clear out some temp\cached stuff that doesn’t clear any other way. I saw a factory reset involved and that shoulda done it too for sure.

Do not see that setting in my Roku TV

But when i go in the App I get the following when running the App from the TV.

Then runs into this

Logs

Plex.log.tar.gz (4.2 MB)

Having similar playback issues on roku boxes too. Several different models, same problems. Same plex app and roku os versions as mentioned in these posts. Logs are turned on remotely..

Content will sometimes display and other times not. If the content does display. trying to play content, will usually say content not available. Plex web, desktop, phone apps are working fine. Issue is increasingly getting worse until totally unusable on any of my roku players. Have done all the recommended plex app manipulations as part of troubleshooting.

I’m having the same issue. 3 days ago Plex just stopped working on my Roku, it opens but the screen is blank. I’ve updated everything, rebooted, uninstalled and reinstalled.
It works fine on our other smart tv, but not on the roku.
Is there a solution for this?

Just gonna mention again…. need to put logs and provide additional details about the situation. The more the better.

If you can get into the Plex app you can get the Plex logs on the Roku. You should also get the server logs. Without those logs there’s not much devs can do.

It’s extra helpful to also include Roku app version, device model and server versions and if possible some media information. There was a bug at one point where specific Roku models had trouble with specific codecs that Plex eventually reported to Roku to fix and if it’s a similar situation, without those details that’ll be harder to get solved quickly.

So details something like:
Roku Streaming Stick HD (3840) with Plex Preview 9.1.36
Plex Server version 1.43.0.10389 on QNAP
MKV files with x264 video and AC3 audio

Since it’s not happening to everyone it’s not a platform wide issue so the more details the better.

Roku logs (do these steps from within the Plex app): https://support.plex.tv/articles/201377603-roku-logs/ - probably better to grab local copies if you can because the remote logs are time limited and dunno when a dev will get to it.

Server logs (do these steps from the WebUI): https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/ - even if you can’t get client logs these can often be enough and are easier to get.
