Plex app (win11) drops all sound

Server Version#: newest 11/11/24
Player Version#: newest 11/11/24

So the plex player (the app thingy) for windows has started dropping all sound on my server (where pms is installed). Checked all “connections” - app is directed to the correct device, device works, etc. Plex web player (same computer) has no problems.

This issue survives reboots as well as uninstall/reinstall. Poked around the hdd for settings (didn’t see any) as well as registry (nope).

Signing out of the app, uninstalling and reinstalling worked 1x. But only lasted a few hours then kaput. Too annoyed to troubleshoot more atm.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Maybe [BUG] Problem with (E-)AC3 Codec and Windows update 24H2 - #59 by rhalibur

Happens with all media. Well, all I checked, including playing themes and like mono audio from ancient popeye cartoons. The app just loses all ability to play audio!

So far hasn’t happened on other computers.

I even tried “dedicated audio” (whatever it’s called) that mutes/ignores all other audio playing on the pc. No joy!

Did you select a valid sound interface in the advanced player settings?

Did you select a HDMI port for audio output?
And if you did, did you tick any of the checkboxes for audio “passthrough”?

Have you ever, during playback, moved the mouse over the bottom player bar, then the speaker icon in the rigth corner and moved your mouse wheel? Or clicked on the speaker icon?

Yes to interface. Tried hdmi on/off. No passthrough. The pc outs to a fairly new Samsung tv.

Sound volume is maxed/not muted in plex app. Windows volume mixer ditto (and the plex app is also maxed).

So - this happened both times not during playback. I believe I hit the stop button (possibly pause). Upon restarting playback loss of all sound w/i the app. All files, including mp3s (well, a sample of files… I’m not checking each one lol!).

Win 11. Fully patched, all drivers updated. Newest mobo fw.

I’m at a loss. No idea as to why this would persist after a reboot and even a reinstall of plex app.

Do you have “exclusive mode” enabled?

Do you have another app running at the same time, which also has exclusive mode enabled in its settings? This means that whichever app is started first, is reserving the audio interface exclusively and all apps started after that don’t get to play any sound.

Tried exclusive on/off. No difference. Nothing else is pre-empting plex either, so far as I can see.

Happened again. A guess - I had installed an equalizer mid-play because the audio was extremely low. Worked great. But, after the file finished, started a new movie and the sound was kaput.

Prior to this it is -possible- that I had been closing some junkware (sonic studio) - another app that is an EQ. However, the app wasn’t actually installed. It’s just a resident program that refuses to go away and when opened redirects to the MS store (click Office click to run crapware). Asus shoves sonic studio down my pcs throat, whether I want it or not.

After sound loss I signed out, popped into a free plex channel and no sound. So - uninstalled Plex. Reinstalled. Free Plex channels have sound. NON Eac5.1 files have sound. All Eac5.1 audio gives no sound. This is different that before, when no audio whatsoever was working.

Web player no problem. Remote plex app no problem.

This is nuts, as the uninstalls leave no settings behind (that I can see). They must be buried somewhere? Also tried deleting pms codec folder contents, per another forum, and restarting plex. No help.

And it happened again. Also tried wiping pms codec folder. No joy.

I also use Parsec remote desktop as well as Steam remote. These things switch the audio device whilst streaming. Maybe this is confusing the plex app? Still, the problem persists between reboots and uninstall/reinstalls of plex app.

This is happening (atm) with EAC 5.1. Other codecs seem ok. The playback device is stereo.

Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated!
