Plex Arcade is crazy good addition but actually isn't worth any money actually (if you're not into Atari)

Hi
Not complaining or offense about it, it’s a cool feature but it’s still needs a lot of work to justify the monthly subscription (except if yall are into Atari retro stuff which is valid argument but most of us will use Arcade for other nifty emulation stuffs), maybe some of the issues adressed bellows are already being fixed but here’s my complains

  • Adding cores is a real pain and you can sometime hit a -10000 or 8005 error
  • Game Transcoder sometime craps out and you need to kill the process manually, else no game will start, at all
  • Actually only English is supported

There’s also a lot to consider so here’s my (and probably most other users of Plex Arcade) features requests

  • Key Binding Mapping
  • Option to disable bilinear filter (and with that custom shaders)
  • Option to increase the internal resolution
  • Online multiplayer (if that is why Parsec is needed to begin with, it could be cool to play a game with another Plex user with an option similar to “Watch together”)
  • Save / Load states
  • (maybe heh) background music, kinda like how it’s done for TV Shows

With that then Plex Arcade could be completely overkill, right now it’s a neat proof of concept that needs a lot of polishing and features

Plex Arcade?? Really??
I just shake my head as to what the Plex folks waste their time on.

Why isnʼt Plex focusing on being the premiere platform for sharing privately-owned media with family and friends? This is what defined Plex, and set it apart when it started.

Itʼs one thing to make enough revenue to pay the bills and continue R&D, but itʼs quite another to chase ad revenue and an IPO.

Subscription-based or ad-based streaming – and good grief, now gaming! – has minimal benefit to those of us who have invested in Plex to serve our privately-owned media.

Rather than games, why not improve photo and home video management? Or an elegant, integrated solution to PDFs, ePubs, books, magazines and other page-oriented documents? Or integrate audio books, speeches and other non-music audio media?

I wish theyʼd work on features that benefit families instead of corporations.

appreciate all the feedback, many of these things are on our list.

i’m sure you know this, but any time you quit we save state and you have the option to resume later. but you’re probably referring to multiple save states?

:man_shrugging:

Yeah, it saves the last known state of the game (There should be an option to disable quick-resume for the most purist out there) but sometimes it doesn’t work, eigher it’s the transcoder crashing or maybe due to the core I’m using but I’ve got issue resuming games, mostly n64 and SNES
Glad most of the features are on the todo list

i’d be curious to see a plex transcoder log from the prior and failing-to-resume run if you can reproduce, just to see if there are any clues in there.

From what I’ve tested today everything seems to work fine, there were no crash nor was able to crash the game transcoder, no “resume issues” as well, it’s far more enjoyable than the day one experience minus the fact that mupen64 isn’t compatible and that the resolution is low but I’ve got an e-mail that some issues’ gonna be fixed.

I’ve tested playing a game when Plex scrape new games but it seems I’m not able to reproduce this day one issue (maybe it was my hardware to begin with)

I’ll update this thread if I encounter this bug again

out of curiosity, what exact core are you using?

For n64 I’m currently using “Parallel” core, it’s not the best core out there since it’s buggy and prone to crash (even on Retroarch)

sorry, i meant what exact mupen64 core file were you finding wasn’t compatible? was thinking we could have a peek and see if there’s anything obvious we’re missing.

Oh, I’m using Mupen64Plus (The one provided in the 3rd party Core Manager app), this one throws me the “The game transcoder exited unexpectedly. 8005 (Game Server)”

Plex Media Server Logs_2021-02-04_21-57-24.zip (3.7 MB)

Here’s the log from my test server, but I do assume that it’s core related rather than Plex related stuffs

As somebody who “invested” earlier than you (and you probably paid the same tiny pittance I did, so I’d be amazed if you didn’t feel like long since got more out than you paid in) can I just said I’ve been waiting and hoping for this from the very beginning and it will be of benefit to my family (who are comfortable with the plex UI, but not my plethora of emulation options with lesser UIs).

Just because you’re not interested, please don’t speak on behalf of the rest of us!
